    I've always heard people say they would work harder if they paid better. I long ago concluded that people's work ethic has little do with pay though. A slacker at minimum wage will be a slacker making big bucks.

    In the case of trucking people often talk about driving differently whether paid by the mile or by the hour but I don't think many speed through construction zones because they're paid by the mile.

    I take pride in my work. when all is done, when i retire someday, people will look back on the way i work and i hope they say 'there was one dedicated working man, if only we had more like him.' Doesn't matter if i go 200 miles with a load or 1200. As long as i keep rolling i keep making the money.

    The mindset I've always had is that you should do your job to the best of your ability, regardless of how lousy your job is. People who do their job poorly out of spite for how lousy their job or their pay is just baffle me. No one ever got a raise or a promotion doing their job terribly.

    There have been lots of studies showing there's not a large correlation between job performance and salary. You need to offer enough to stay competitive but beyond that... The trucking companies offering bonuses based on fuel used/on-time deliveries ect. got it right.

    Being paid percentage every day is a race to see how fast I can get done. Quality does not suffer tho.

    Only people I've heard say that were just plain lazy useless people who didn't want to work.

    It's more been the opposite from my experiences. You'll work better if they pay you more? No. You have to show your willing to work and THEN they will pay you more for your good performance.

    Every job I've worked at I worked as hard as I could.
    My belief is that if you don't like doing your job, then you should quit and find a new one.

    I had a union hourly job once where the other guys would bust my chops for getting things done too fast, I was making them look bad, the company will expect all of them to get things done like that..... Whether I'm paid hourly or by the mile, or by the run, I always just want to get the job done and go home. I can't stand sitting around just to clock suck, that isn't me. My old boss had to threaten my job, sort of, to get me to wash my truck because I didn't want to waste the time sitting at the streakin beacon ;)

    Honestly, pay has never affected how I work, but my respect for the people in charge of me does. My job now, I work with a guy who has an incredibly huge ego. We're technically equal, but you'd never know from seeing us work together... When I'm on his crew, I barely do a thing. One of our other drivers who will out-work anyone I've ever met so far, when I'm on his crew I don't stop moving.

    Typcially I just want to get done and go home, but one person can set the mood for an entire job.

    An older, wise friend of mine once said: My time is the only thing I have for sale so, I have to get as much for it as I possibly can".

    Having said that, I do the best work I can... but I work it the way that best benefits me for the time I put in.
