driving w/ tandams all the way back, '53

I know 3 states right off the top of my head that do enforce it, Va, Ga, and Fl. The scale man in Florida stopped me on the scale just last week to let me know that I was over length by 8 inches, but because I only had 26k in the trailer he let me shorten up then go. He said the over length ticket is more than the overweight ticket.

 

Thats only so the trailer will be level with the loading dock. Budweiser is the same here in Fl. Once loaded then I move it back up to the 41ft mark.

 

It has to do with the polar moment of inertia, by moving the tandem back, you increase the polar moment and it is harder (i.e. it takes more wind force,) to rotate the trailer about the tandems. Think about choking up on a bat, same idea is in play, just in the other direction.

 

Apparently none of the posters that say its not legal anywhere haven't read my thread when i asked about it. If you look in the atlas you'll see about 30 states that allow you to run with tandems all the way back.

thats as bad as seeing some of these guys run with them all the way back and not locked in place..funny to watch em back up bump the dock and keep going...lol..not funny watching them go down the road that way

I've had to drive with the tandems all the way back before...one of the lock pins was busted and wouldn't stay retracted. Youre not doing anything wrong or illegal if you're in a state(s) with no bridge law, which is most them on the western half of the country except of course for California. (Of course.)

So, epic fail to the OP for the tirade.

 

Never seen a set come out on the road, but I did watch a driver slide his trailer right off the top of the tandem @ Bloomsbury one time. They were stuck and he kept going faster and faster as he tried to break them loose by grabbing the johnny bar. He must have been doing 20mph when they came loose, and he never stood a chance. They did a nice flip as the trailer dropped off the front of the slide frame. Did it right in front of the restaurant windows, too.
