With my company every O/O is required to have a CAT scale for bobtail and with an empty trailer. Sometimes we do power only loads, so bobtail weights are important. Weight for empty trailer with tractor is required to know precisely how much freight we can put on the deck.

Regarding "the dumbest question" title of the thread, it isn't. The dumbest question is the one never asked.

I agree. That girl who recently destroyed the historic bridge probably wishes she had asked a "dumb question".

Insulting people who ask valid questions is not a good idea.

What is that they say, "a dumb question is better than a dumb mistake."

I have ask many drivers what they have for power under the hood and they don't even have a clue. Hey, if it pays without knowing.....why put anything into that melon besides ear buds.

Giuseppe Ventolucci and Lepton1 Thank this.

Somebody who is a company driver with zero aspirations of ever being more than just a company driver, I can see where it doesn't matter. They don't have any say in the matter one way or the other, so what difference does it make? What is absolutely scary, though, are the O/O's who have paid good money for the truck, or the L/O's who dream of someday owning the truck they are driving who can't tell you the size or power rating of the engine, the final drive ratio of the transmission, the rear axle ratio, or even the tire size without having to look at the tire.

It's one thing to be clueless when somebody else made the decisions and just handed you the keys to drive it. Whole 'nother ballgame when YOU bought a truck without a clue how it was spec'd to know whether or not it would be suited to what you were planning to do with it.

I hear you there. The truck I'm driving now was the first truck the owner bought. At first I was inclined to name her Jenny. Now I just call her The Gutless Wonder.

Check your cab card. If it's like my Ontario cab card it will list an 'empty weight' for the tractor. According to mine, my tractor weighs 19,018 lbs empty.

If the term is being used as I think it is. Uncleal13 is more right than any one else. The old single screw 60 series chevys were always 2 ton trucks in our area. And they weighed more than 4k and would scale more than twice that also. Think about it guys your gcwr can be more with a 2 wheel drive 3/4 ton than a 4 wheel drive 1 ton. And all of those weigh more than 1 ton.
This was as stated old terminology that ,I am not sure had any specific ratings.
