I like the Turnpike XATA stuff... Small module that plugs into truck, combined with smartphone app. Used it with minimal issues when I worked for QC.
Well, I'm not sure they're considered an EOBR, but there's Trucklogger for Win/Mac/Linux, DDL for Windows, and several others I haven't played with.
I wouldn't go out and buy anything yet. Until the final rule is published, we won't know what is required, and the large carriers are pushing for a simple elog solution that doesn't require an interface to the ECM. Additionally, the longer you wait the better the possibility is that any solution will decrease in price over what is offered today.
No, it should tell when the truck is in motion but other than that, most of the EOBR regulations are setup to keep the data safe.
Because of the supertruckers who refuse to run legally, and manage to kill someone in the process. We're all tarred with the same brush.
Any thing on a smart phone could cover the "in motion" part of the equation as well as doing the logging stuff. I already use a few apps that are not trucking specific, that track the location of my vehicle for mapping stuff, track the actual speed I am running so I can compare to speedometer, etc and the total cost of all of those apps combined barely ate a $5 bill. That one will log the speed I have done for as long as I let it run. Great as a backup documentation if Barney wants to be a moron. I would agree with others, that one should wait until the FMCSA gets the final rule in place. So much is going to change between now and any deadline, so it is almost a waste to invest in anything costly right now. No need to let your paranoia gland grow too large. To quote a phrase from a Louis L'Amour novel.... don't hurry, you will get a more harmonious outcome.
