    The way its written is slightly ambiguous but a plain text reading makes me think that Western intends it to be the full 180 days from the start of training. Except that the 180 days doesn't have to be consecutive, so who/what determines a day of work?

    The whole contract reads like something prepared by a first year associate as a blunt club to scare and control new hires. Most of it isn't enforceable, and trying to collect would likely cost more than it's worth.

    Yes, that's what they're trying to do. The language states they are providing "refresher training", not what they're actually doing - new hire orientation.

    It puts me in mind of some of these flatbed carriers that make their company drivers pay for all the equipment. Or some of the hidden fees used car dealers try to get you to pay AFTER you agree on price. The only way I would agree to pay for orientation is if they sent their representative to my house. On my schedule.

    Took my sister-in-law to a dealership to buy a car. I told her not to agree to anything except the car price; no extra insurance, warranties, etc. I went with her to the dealership. I'd already arranged for her to get car insurance through USAA Federal Bank.
    When we left, with the car, the salesman was furious with both of us. In fact, he was enraged and talking loud for others to hear.

    Good on you.
    The last one I bought from a dealer, already printed in the contract, all contracts, was a $1500 delivery fee and a $250 processing fee.
    We played the game ALLLLLLLLL morning to finally agree on pricing, and then they pull this stunt at the signing.

    I got up and walked out.

    Wargames and Chinatown Thank this.

    @Chinatown
    Speaking of negotiations, ever thought about being an agent for drivers who suck at negotiating?

    This is why I like living in northern WI. I just bought a new car and the process was pleasant- a little dickering back and forth, a number was agreed upon, and when I took delivery this morning there were no surprises.

    Wargames, lual and Chinatown Thank this.

    That's the million dollar question there. I can't imagine that an experienced guy would be held to the same numbers. He's not going to have to go out with a trainer, or do nearly the type intense training the contract is showing. Most other companies that hire experience drivers will probably keep the final paycheck if they quit before the probationary period, usually 90 days. That way they get the cash back for drug screens, physicals, food, transportation, etc
