My wife worked with a guy who actually convinced everyone--including his live-in boyfriend*--that he had lymphoma so he could cut out of work, stay home and drink. For real. How'd he get busted? My wife lost her mother to lymphoma, knows the signs and symptoms, and she takes a very dim view of people doing that kind of thing...! *Yeah, I know, but that's his thing to work out with God. Shame was, his boyfriend is actually a really cool guy.
Mostly it's simply following in the companies footsteps. Spend 15-30 minutes filling out an application and not even a thank you. Or they go to several interviews and never even get a call stating "We hired someone else." Back when I was in IT it was very common to go to 10 interviews and if you're lucky you'll get 2 call backs. One that would want to hire and at most 1-2 that send an email thinking you for wasting an hour of your time on the interview. No, while I can see the op's frustration, companies brought this on themselves. And it's not just large companies that do it. I've gone to several interviews of mom and pop stores and did not get so much as a think you for your time.
I get that. I really do. However, that’s different then accepting a position and going the whole 9 yards only to bail right before the end zone.
You know what’s crazy, this guy I’m speaking of was a pathological liar and manipulater. He would take fuses out and mix them around which actually caused a fire behind the dash of the truck. It was my first truck an old 91 T800 so I was just thinking old truck bad luck thank God he got the fire out with the fire extinguisher. Little did I know he was sabotaging it and then acting like the hero. He would say things like oh the fuel filter clogged and it wouldn’t run! I was able to pull over and replaced the filter myself and got it going! All made up bs. Then faked the cancer thing. It was nuts. If I ever confronted him he would say oh come out to the truck I’ll Show you exactly how I did it and what happened! Expecting me to say no that’s ok I trust you. Sounds crazy and it was! I was only a few years into owning trucks and was young myself and still learning. The guy about broke my ### before I figured it all out. I had never come across such a person in my life.
Consider yourself lucky. Don't waste your time with ex owner operators. One big headache. Doesn't make a difference that they went broke On their own. They think they're smarter than you, and start Telling you how they think you should run Your business. Let somebody else deal with them.
Same people that when you hold a door for them dont even say thanks . Park at fuel islands, drive like idiots and dont know how to take a shower . The guy did you a favor Midland's by spareing you a trashed truck and ticked off customers.
Fast forward a few days and they call and ask me to take the truck to Amarillo as they are flying a driver in from seattle. It is almost closing time anyway, so we agree on a price, and I call my wife and tell her to come to Amarillo and pick me up. I get there and there driver is a no show. I called and they said he missed the plane but would be there tomorrow, No problem, shoot me a comcheck and the truck stop manager will have your keys. No way, they want me to stay with the truck. I am like why, there isn't even a sheet on the mattress, what exactly are you worried about someone stealing. In the end I stay with the truck, my wife goes back to NM. The next day no driver, I finally call the airport bar and surprise, surprise. I tell him he better get a cab and get there pronto, or he will not be finding that truck. He does show, so now I call to settle up They do not want to pay me for staying over, insisting I settle for theoriginal agreement, I like hmmmm no wonder the original driver was headed home. lol Finally after they understand that I am in possession of theri truck, and it is in a very short time headed back to my storage yard, they settle up. The driver ask me how much fuel is in the truck. I told him, and good that will be enough, I told him his load was at borger and it is only 30 or so miles. Now get this, he tells me that he isn't going after the load or going to work for this company, he jsyt was stuck in seattle and need to get home in Houston. lol After the heated discussion over my pay, I didn't even bother to call the company and let them know what was going on. lol
