And herein lies the very thing that will tank productivity.

Used to be if the type of shipper you describe was near a place where one could take a 10, you'd load and then go park. Now, one will have to take the break BEFORE loading, basically tanking at least one full day's worth of driving.

With the hit to revenue that having to regular make such decisions is going to create, how can anyone work or even live like this? Nobody will want to do this job.

I'm leaning towards a theory postulated by an earlier poster that this may mean going back to a pre-deregulation modus operandi, because on top of all this we have the parking issue. Sleeper trucks will HAVE to be ran as teams at least for reefer and van freight, while local drivers paid hourly and can afford to sit for an eternity handle the P&D's.

Or the government can just fix the Hours of Service and give drivers a split-sleeper option like Canadians get. But whichever is easier.

I never agree with all the laws, I just realize there are going to have to be changes and adaptations to have to work with them. Maybe customers will start to realize that trucks don't necessarily run on their schedule and need more time to actually do their job.

Elogs are not a new or rare animal. Most trucks have been running them for years. Those drivers load, unload and park as often as anyone else.

    Don't count on it.

I can't speak for your part of the world, but down here there is a LOT of money behind this, and money talks.

But not every truck spends hours at an unfamiliar or otherwise unreliable shipper or receiver.

That will most likely earn you a free ride on a 50 ton hook to whomever's impound yard that particular "customer" happens to have a contract with.

Or it's Friday and you are empty at 9 am and can't move until 3 pm. They close the door at noon lock the gate and return on Monday. Enjoy your weekend! Got your 5 gallon pail with you?

Politicians in the pockets of big corporations, yes. Here, I think the whole deal is we have it because the US has it. Since so much of our economy is dependent on the US, we have to appease them in order to do business there.

Don't count it out either. The split sleeper berth study shows they're considering almost exactly what we have in Canada for the split. That would solve many of the issues that people run into when stuck at a shipper longer than planned on.
