That's why I carry both, and a strap wrench. Although my engine will prime itself.

You might be able to drain the fuel water separator, I have the same one you do, and usually you can get 50 or so miles out of it before it goes south again so you can get to a TS where they can do it easy with your filters.

Or do it yourself, just buy some fuel to prime.

    Change both filters.

Dont dump your old dirty fuel out your old filters into your new ones, it's about guarantees to be a serious pita.

OK OK, thanks for all the advice and also for giving me a wake up call. I've been up since 0700 yesterday and it is now 0150. I ended this day at a SH**TY food DC in a NE state I should not have taken a load to, but it paid $4/mile so I did. 9 pm delivery. They botched my paperwork and I was stuck there 2 hours after I got unloaded, almost 4 total. I'm seriously tired. After sleep and coffee I would not think of dumping old fuel in to a new filter.

So, here's the update: After I unloaded truck is running a lot better. It hasn't stalled or anything. I'll swap my filters at a truck stop tomorrow.

BTW, I only fuel at Pilot/J and hardly ever anywhere but in the SE where I live. Last fuel I bought was on 81 at Fort Chiswell J a couple days ago. I must've gotten crap fuel. Crisis avoided I think.

So, can anyone tell me the answer to my other question. 18k on these filters. Is that short life or average, or do you think it was bad fuel?

Fuel was probably bad... At least somewhat.
You should be able to go the full PM intervals without needing to change.

You should get yourself a Davco as soon as you can though, to avoid this exact scenario. Soooo much easier..

    Get some sleep brother!

My spin on fuel filters I change within 20000 miles. Only a couple times needed before that.
    Just like your current situation.
    Good luck

Filters are cheap, just do it. Years ago, fuel was so dirty, sometimes I'd go through 2 filters in a week with the old Cummins. I carried a gallon jug of fuel and a couple filters always.

Looks like a 1 gallon gas can for diesel is getting thrown in the truck. I have about 20 around the shop though but I'm running out of room. Hoping to add a tool box to my catwalk pretty soon.
