I was sick one night after a nap, FELL out of the bunk tumbled down the fuel tank onto the gravel. Laid there in a pile.
Three drivers showed up one hauling water the other smoke and a third a blanket.
Believe it or not all three items cleared me up with that fresh air such as it is that night and perhaps a little kindred spirit among us which is really, really rare in this industry. Handed a driver a 20 told him to get me a CO2 monitor from the truck stop store, he came back and we threw the battery in it. closed up the truck and set it up like i had it with heat on cab and sleeper with blankets closed in the windshield and one sleeper vent open into the wind up top for fresh air.
I think the readings were approaching off the charts ppm which I think is very dangerous.
What was going on was the parking lot was a slope down to me combined into a bowl. All the gases went down to me and the 4 with me in our tiny corner row. A temperature inversion at about 30 feet concentrated it more.
Those three probably saved my life such as it is by their simple actions and encouragement. Especially after a aura enhanced migraine showed up 20 minutes after.
Found a hotel room and slept a glorious night and slept in until a prearranged and paid for breakfast service at 10am.
As far as incidents go that was relatively mild. However I was told that it would just accumulate in the blood like oxygen until I never wake up ever again.
gallons per idle hour?

I can run that APU in all 50 states. I can't idle in all 50.Odin's Rabid Dog, bzinger, Rideandrepair and 1 other person Thank this.

I’ve thought of a a tool box, like plumbers, electricians use. The long drawers. Mounted in the side box. About 3’ or 4’ long drawers, might be a pita, though, if on the shoulder, as sidebox is on Drivers side. Just an idea.
-
I don't think they are a good idea. Those drawers will escape. Otherwise we all would be using them.

I love my carrier apu and wouldn't be without it .
But there are limits to it and I dont run it needlessly, if its 30 or 40 ish I just use my mattress heater with the battery monitor on .
And I'm mindful of how I park so I'm not blowing exhaust under the truck next to me .
When parked in the sun in hot weather above 85 it struggles to keep up till the sun goes down and I'll idle till then .
Winter is tricky and depends on my fuel treatment condition, the wind and how cold it will get ..generally after -10 actual temp I'll idle but if its windy that will change.
Overall it depends on my comfort , fuel condition and if the truck engine will be warm enough ...I avoid sub zero starts . -
And another thing ....I seldom get south of I 40 spending most of my time up on 80 ,90 and 94 so in the winter i watch the weather like a hawk knowing what I'm heading into daily and what's on the way .
Before I get home I know what the weather forecast is days out knowing what the trucks needs will be .88228822, PE_T, x1Heavy and 1 other person Thank this. -
Where is that burn rate from?PE_T Thanks this.

This new T680 I'm in now has the KIM (Kenworth Idle Management) system.
It monitors battery level and oil temp, and will auto start and idle up to charge the battery bank and maintain oil temp. I don't recall offhand what the trigger oil temp is, I think it is in the mid-30's.
It's a pretty slick system, and so far it's kept my idle percentage around 15%, except when it's really cold.PE_T Thanks this. -
I’ve written about my Tripac APU fuel consumption in this site almost two years ago. Here it is:
86scotty Thanks this. -
Buying one for your existing rig might be stupid, or not, depending on your needs. You solved your problem well enough but you still have to get out and start, stop and fuel it. Not true with an APU. All done from the cab.
Buying a truck that already has an APU makes the most sense. You won't pay full price for it then. Most APU equipped trucks I see for sale aren't priced much differently than one without, if any at all.
