Spray every moving part of your 5th wheel down with WD-40 about every other month and it will make life easier. It helps displace the water that freezes up to cause problems. And when I drop a trailer, I pull the trailer brake, put it in reverse and push against the trailer before pulling the tractor park brake. A properly functioning and tight 5th wheel mechanism should require this. Pulling forward against the king pin with a closed 5th wheel locks it so some jack*** walking by can't pull your 5th wheel for you and then sit in his truck to make a Youtube video.
In my opinion, leaving a clean trailer is part of hauling the load. So what, you give up 5 minutes of time. You can give up all your time you want. Me I got better things to do!
I'm hauling 40k+lbs of hardwood flooring NOT on pallets...Before they loaded I asked them if I could walk thru my trailer and it was a good thing I did...There were 4 sixteen penny nails sticking up out of the wood part of the floor with 3" bent over, can you imagine the damage to the bottom layer of hardwood flooring they would have caused?...Took me less than 10 minutes to walk the trailer, get my hammer, pull the nails and ok them to load...
Why not carry spare equiptment? If you drop and hook or stay with the trailer, it doesn't matter. Mud flaps aren't heavy and easy to install. So are lights, wipers, grommits, fuses, oil, etc. I wouldn't pay $400 for anyone to install them either. YOU ARE DRIVING, IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. Obviously, most can't make major repairs or change tires. But there are small things such as mudflaps that you can buy cheap, put on easy and get down the road with. Driving isn't just holding the wheel.
I'm gonna ask for a can of touch up paint...and some swift trailer decals...so I can fix things when I feel really bored....more productive than sitting on the 'net ...playing on the forums....I see about a dozen Swift trailers parked here in Joplin Petro....think I'll go inspect there trailers for them...I am a company guy....
i was waiting in line to drop at a D/C and saw a Co driver in front of me with a missing mudflap on the trailer. raised him on the CB and told him about his missing mudflap, to which he calmly replied "OH, it's OK. I'm about to drop this trailer anyway" Had to turn my CB off quickly before i said something i shouldn't have
