Yeah, probably. I gotta say, I'm happy with the arrangement. I prefer to haul light and not get held up by goverened trucks on hills. Nothing makes me happier than flying by company trucks. Probably because I drove one for many years and hated it. I don't always run over 70. Lots of days when I have flex in my schedule I set her on 65 and roll.

I got 10 MPG today with 40,000 in my reefer, but I was going 60 all day on flat I-5 in CA. Speed is the biggest enemy of fuel economy. I ran DH across Nevada a few months ago at 75-80 the entire way, and never got better than 7.5 MPG. If I'm going 55-60 DH I can get 10-12 MPG.

Pulled and delivered empty new trailers for 15 years. Best fuel mileage always came from smooth bore tankers with rear mounted steps, or flatbeds with no front board. Automatic lift axles help. Got over 10 mpg on a 1000 mile trip with a fully decked out '53 Kentucky Van for Frito Lay going to a trade show in Dallas, every aerodynamic device known to man on it.
Absolutely the worst trailers to pull for fuel mileage: Open top 13' tall U shaped dump trailers used for hauling scrap. Lucky to get 5 mpg with any wind. Cattle trailers are bad, car hauling trailers are tough.

And cattle haulers all drive big loud Petes and KW's with bit Cats and let them idle all night too. I guess they're on the gallons per mile plan instead of miles per gallon?

    D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

I drove from Seattle to Portland today empty, but there was a storm blowing through and a very strong head wind. I never went above 63 MPH but my mileage never got any better than 7.5 MPG when it's usually around 10 MPG empty. Little things can make a big difference.

    D.Tibbitt and 86scotty Thank this.
