i wasnt racing anyone to that intersection the accident occurred. the view of the intersection is partially blocked from where i am traveling due to trees blocking the view. i cant see him until its too late. that intersection is a problem with many accidents in exactly the same fashion. the guy i encountered today was a meathead, he departed his lane. if i depart my lane i am always absolutely sure there is no oncoming traffic.
i did not cause the dangerous situation but i agree that perhaps i should not have allowed it escalate.
van's are longer and have far more blind spots.
tankers offer better visibility and are easier to get around town due to their shorter length. however tankers are a greater rollover risk so slow down in corners more especially when loaded. i personally do not like dry vans.
i made the mistake of assuming that the guy behind me was going to stay there. i had no idea he was actually going to pass. next time i will assume he is going to pass.Muddydog79, D.Tibbitt and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
IT ALL COMES DOWN TO SITUATIONAL AWARENESS. No matter WHAT you pull. I just hope some of usn's ole' hands may have taught you a thing or two. That's all.FlaSwampRat and buddyd157 Thank this. -
how long have you been driving, just curious. allot of OTR drivers have more experience (miles) then me anyways. i have been at this job two years in November and i average between 100-125 miles per day...... about 40K miles per year. i have different types of experience but not the miles. when it comes to bad weather, i probably see more of it. dealing with icy driveways is a little different too, most distribution centers salt, farm driveways not so much.
i would guess i have between 100-125K miles of commercial driving experience with some of it in class B dump trucks.D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
Driving around 500 /day on a 2 stop d/h/swap route currently. Pays well; home daily and off weekends. Took me awhile to work my way up, leme tell ya. I put my 'years' in OTR, and Tanks.. (miss them) and Flats when asphalt won't flow during the winter. .D.Tibbitt and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
im guessing asphalt tankers is just one large single compartment. i usually pull two compartment farm pickup trailers but i have done single compartments as well and when they are partially loaded they aren't much fun. instead of a smaller surge you get massive bang...... wait for it..... bang LOL. you really have to watch those single compartment trailers in the winter and hills..... as you travel up the hill, the load will transfer to the back of the trailer, and you will loose weight and traction on your drive tires. two compartment trailers offer a huge advantage, load the front all of the way and weight stays where you need it.
i bet asphalt tends to be worse then milk with the surge? i hear thick syrups are really bad.G13Tomcat Thanks this. -
in this last episode, you assumed the driver would stay behind you.
you see what we are saying..??
you are DRIVING BLINDLY in assumptions....
i "see" the real dangerous driver, what i cannot see, is why YOU CAN'T SEE it....
assumptions will get you every time, and this latest incident makes number 2....(that we know of)
and YES, had there been an accident on that hill, the lawyers would have you charged with "racing" as you did not back out of it, when YOU SAW that other truck, that almost made you crap your pants...dunchues, Western flyer, G13Tomcat and 1 other person Thank this. -
i was never blamed in my accident of any wrong doing. today was a learning experience. get rid of tailgater, let him pass because you cannot predict what he is going to do.
Muddydog79 and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
The stop'surge wants to push, and then when you finally git'r settled, light turns green and you draggggggg UP that hill, surge against you. As I said, 4th both ways. For me, anyway. Quite a learning curve.FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
