Kinda/sorta. I had been gainfully employed for several years now (since 2008 I think,) after many years of being an o/o. Needed a break from that for a while.
Been in propane/energy/gas transportation mostly. It has it's ebbs and flows... when winter hits, we're crazy busy. Springtime comes, they forget you exist. This last company was such a miserable existence to work with that I just basically took an extended vacation since they had no work anyways (about a month,) and went and looked at trucks to buy.
Found the one I want, went through the grueling process of borrowing money, and will probably get the truck home next week sometime and hook back up to a tanker and haul gasoline, fuel, and stuff that blows up and burns uncontrollably if mishandled.
Now if you feel like you have the need to slap me up side the head over this...you have my permission. I would fully understand. I still think I popped a fuse in my head. But my perspective is, I lost a $70K/yr. job over a corporate merger, the whole scene changed, so I have to produce income somehow so I created a job for myself. That's all this is. No glory, pride, bragging rights...I been here and dunn it before. It ain't pretty, but it's what I do I guess.
I have a couple older trucks I "play with" to make a few bucks to survive, but I am of the age where I am starting to stress over health insurance and all that entails, and the compliance vortex in general. I figured I should dig my heels in and start thinking about retirement more seriously, because I blinked and 10 years just flew by me. With hardly any jobs available in this God-foresaken area for a guy like me who is the self-proclaimed "world's worst employee" anyway...this is the best possible scenario for me to earn a living. Believe me, if there was a decent paying job unattached to a steering wheel, I'd be on it like white on rice.
That's why I'm chattering so much right now pattyj, once I get rolling, I'll be a lot less active here I promise! I'm enjoying the hobo life right at the moment. -
Thanks Derailed.
Hmmmm, don't recall this KW at any shows yet, other than Deerfield,Mass. in May was the first one I stopped into. I have been running up and down the Northway regularly with it lately though. Loaded a backhoe in Round Lake and hauled to Saranac Lake 2 Sundays ago now...maybe you saw it on the highway and wondered who that crazy guy was with the old KW and a backhoe with a 9 ft. snowplow stuffed underneath it, hanging off the back a couple feet and over the gutter side 6"...? LOL. I would have had to plead insanity on that one. -
Im not working because of the same reason, here pay sucks big time for driving jobs. There are some that pay hourly and applied to,and also another one this morning.I did the OTR thing for 9 yrs then mom got sick and dad needed help with her.I found my first local job stayed there 2 yrs then went with another company. Was getting paid 38cpm,and no pay for dh miles.Did awhole lot of sitting all for around 200 miles aday.Worked every bit of my 14 every day go home most the time too tired to eat,get up and do it all over again.I didn't realize how much local pay sucks till that job.So now im looking for hourly wage with a set schedule. If I cant find that then ill take getting paid by the mile or load only I wanna work no more then 10 hrs a day.Why work your full 14 and get paid for 8 or 9 hrs and make around $8.00 an hr before taxes.I'm finding awhole lo of #### jobs here that ecspect free labor out of the drivers.Meaning they want drivers/dock workers when not driving a lot don't say the pay in the ad.Then when I call them, talk about a disappointment.Hey nothing wrong with hauling gas, heard it pays good.
