    Thank you again for your replies every little bit of info is greatly appreciated and informative...

    here is the low down of what the school told him and what he has relayed to me and what they have written on paper for him (which I am aware is not contracted so doesnt really mean squat)...

    his schooling is 4 weeks = 160 hours for 3500.00

    classroom hours 80
    OTR training hours 80

    trains on 53' trailers
    22-43 cents per mile
    800.00-1100.00 a week
    15.00-26.00 hr
    first year earnings 40.000. this is what they have on paper

    but when i talked to the lady down at the school she said he would make about 500.00-700.00 a week or apx 30-35 gran a year to start but would increase depending on the miles he drives the more miles the more money..now having read so much about this i know non of this can hold true for the most part.

    my husband said he was told he would be driving a flat bed doing west coast regional routes, going apx 3 days and coming home for a day or two then back out again and so forth. now im even wondering if that is incorrect too..i told him he would have to unlaod and load or what ever there would be physical work involved but he is insisting he doesnt do that??? he claims all he is doing is delivering dropping off and taking another truck to deliver more ..??

    on the pre-hire for werner which came back in apx 24 hrs of submitting his application, is the reason why i even started the indept research, i thought this was a bit quick to recieve so quickly and raised my eye brows a bit ... made me wonder, and sure enough there was something well lots of somethings to be said about them...

    I know all to well that you have to start somewhere and that he would have to start at the bottom, im prepared for this, but to start from below the bottom is what concerns me the most...I have no problem with him being away from home as long as he gets a paycheck that allows him to support his family and for us to live comfortly without so much stress and worry. If i have to get a job, which i have NO problem doing since being a at home mother is just way to demanding lol (i have done both work and at home) I would rather work but if he is out driving there is no way i can work and take care of my littles ones, day care is just to much money, so with that being said he needs to work and make enough to take care of us..i hope that makes sense...sorry for rambling ... i am dedicated to doing as much research as possible to avoid much more hardship then we are already experiencing so all the info you are providing is very very helpful and i thank you so much....

    If he is driving a flatbed.He will be tarping and straping these loads.It can be hard and dirty work.I never heard of dropping and hooking a flat bed.
    And going out for 3 days and back home. I'm not buying that either.Your doing great to average 500 miles a day. Do the math.To get any kind of check,5 days out atleast.

    Living in Las Vegas is tough for driving jobs. The city is just in the middle and not many companies stop there. But there are a few and a couple of good ones too. First You've have to get out and go see some of these because I don't think you'll find what you need on line for all of them. I suggest that you set your goals for the best and work down. ABF has a terminal there in town that not too many people know about. I don't have the address but it's located over where the Showboat was just off of Boulder Hyw. They pay union scale and I saw they have training programs. GI has a terminal there too but I don't know where that one is. They ARE union so you might want to look at the Teamsters to find out how to start. Yellow has a very large terminal down in Barstow and I believe they are union also.

    If he wants to haul gasoline then you can let me know and I'll put you in contact with a person that I know will help. But you should know that hauling gasoline you have to start at the bottom and work up but it usually pays better than alot of other jobs. You're also in a town that construction has not slowed down in many years. Hauling dirt there pays alot too once you get enough experience to pull the 2 long trailers. But there's so many dirt haulers the work is steady and you might find a company that will fit your goals. You could go right over to Anderson and Sons and pull triples up north and back and they'll hire you if they need a driver. They are over on Arcata street close to loosee road. Right next door is Viking. It's only a hub for them but I'd check there before Anderson. Whatever you do stay away from Las Vegas Trucking. I've heard alot of bad stories from drivers they messed over real bad.

    I can tell you if he goes out to the advertized trucking companies he'll have a hard time making the money you need. He'll have to be gone alot more than home. I don't know what side of town you're at but raising kids in Las Vegas is hard. That's why my wife and I left. Once I was retired from my company our bags were packed.

    I think you should get out and go around to some of the companies in town. I know there's afew with very good benefits and training programs to start. You might be lucky with the bigger companies because there's not alot of drivers working out of vegas. I'll zip you a PM and let you know more.

    Here is some informaiton regarding CRETE and how to get a job with them.

    There is a great thread on this forum [​IMG] [​IMG] CRETE - A Year in Review that is written by Evertruckerr which I think is one of the most useful series of posts. It gives a week by week account of what driving for a big company is really like.

    I've seen several posts, here and elsewhere asking if Crete has a driving school. I just received a packet yesterday from the recruiting director that outlines their options.

    They will hire student drivers graduates from a select number of PTDI schools. One of these schools is Southeast Community College in Lincoln Nebraska.

    "Crete Carrier Corporation in cooperation with Southeast Community College offers Professional Truck Driver Training. SCC is a high-quality college."

    Tuition is $1028 for out of state applicants and is due in full on your first day. It looks like they are on a college quarter system so classes do not start every week. For Nebraska residents, the price drops by $200. There are some minor additional costs ... $25 graduation fee...but nothing out of line. The actual class schedule is Monday thru Friday...roughly six hours a day and either a morning or afternoon schedule which might allow potential students to work part time somewhere else.

    200 hours of class room / lab time and 100 hours of behind the wheel time.

    During the time you are enrolled, you are not an employee of CRETE. Once you graduate, you then can become an employee of Crete and during your 8 week training with CRETE you will begin to receive pay.

    CRETE notes that first year drivers average $33 - $41,000 (.34 cents a mile) They note that they do not aggressively recruit students and like to hire experienced drivers. They are very selective on the students they hire.

    The Training Process Timeline Page indicates that a potential student driver applies with CRETE and once initially accepted for potential employment, CRETE facilitates your enrollment at SCC Once you graduate, you come back to CRETE and do another drug test and physical so they can confirm you are still good to go.

    The Course Description for SCC looks straightforward. They are very strict about attendance. There are no excused absences..even your first one drops your final score for the class by two points.

    There is no student housing at SCC. CRETE's brochure on the program lists some alternative housing solutions....private inexpensive short term rental apartments and houses.

    CRETE will provide you with the list of other authorized schools they consider student drivers from. You can call their recruitment office and they will provide the one closest to your residence.


    Another poster mentioned May Trucking. I have a lot of friends that drive for them and they all seem to like it. Look up Whiteline Films on YouTube and Steve Adams is a driver for them. He makes a lot of short comedy films about driving, but he also has some very good videos about the life of a professional truck driver.     thanks for the info this is great to know..we are on the south/east end of vegas off of tropicana/nellis or Tropicana/Boulderhwy...my husband doesnt want to live here and is only here because of me....and even though this is a dry desert rat hole, after being here for the last 24 yrs of my life, its just home and to hard to leave plus my family is here...I agree not a good place to raise kids!

    I dont have a problem with him being away from home as long as he makes good money, he was hesitant to go on the road because again he doesnt want to be away from me (attachement problems) but i talked him into it, thinking it would be good for him, experience wise. If he choose to do in town only that is fine too but i was just thinking he would get more out of it by first going on the road for a while....so as you have advised and others too we will check out all our other options you all have suggested. Surely we can come up with something better then the worst im sure...well I hope any ways:biggrin_255:

    I am sure as long as he is driving a big truck he will haul anything that he can get his hands on ... so i would like more info if you have it of course..thanks again

    There are better paying companys out there , and some will take drivers right out of school. some of the others have given you some real good suggestions,

    Some more just some off the top of my head.check to see if your in the hiring area.
    Trans Am , TMC , Combined Transport , Schnieder National , Knight ,
    Conway truckload, Interstate Dist. , GTI ,

    Best bet .have your husband go up to the truckstops and talk to drivers , most will be very helpfull . Best of luck
