But if you do hit something it won't be the bumper of a $5k Kia.

Never get out of your truck while backing. Ever.

Set the brakes then get out. As many times as you want/need.

I've been driving over five years and I've learned, I don't care what others think. If I need to get out I do so. If someone wants to laugh they can laugh. I don't hit stuff. I get the trailer where it needs to go with calls to safety required. Laugh it up.

I applied for a trash truck job out of CDL school but was told that the job stinks (literally) and that you drive for 12 hours a day and are in the truck for 2am every day.

    No thanks.

Really? Sounds like a good job to me. Prolly union, 4 hours OT every day, AND home by 2-3 pm. I’d get used to the smell for that.

Maybe I’m biased, because around here trash truck drivers make $100 grand + per year

Absolutely ok to get out and look when backing (After setting the brakes as ChaoSS said).

Would you rather be the show off that says ‘I got this’ and promptly smashes into something, or be the cautious guy that gets out and walks around the truck three times to back into a tight spot?

I know of two companies that are home daily, and sometimes they hire new cdl grads, even though the website has "experience required." Both companies do the same type work; delivering food carts to airliners; those meals you eat on passenger flights.
    Sky Chef - union
    Gate Gourmet - non-union
