I have a friend that went into trucking 3 years ago. He has no home/apt. When he does his time off he either rents a room for a cpl days or goes and stays with his mom in Atlanta or Dad in New Jersey.

He has banked $50,000 in the 3 years.

Sold the house 5 years ago. Got a motel that I use when I want out of the truck. Know the owner, know everyone that works there, know the other drivers that stay there (Canadians...good people). Kingsize bed, shower strong enough to blow a couple layers of skin off, and an extremely reasonable rate.

My idea is similar to the Tijuana thing, but uh...I am not sure a 'rich' Caucasian Older Male would be left 'unpestered' in Mexico.

My thoughts are the same as Bum's--if I am spending less that 7 out of 30 days at 'home', then why bother the mortgage, the upkeep, the risk of someone breaking in, the utilities, the property taxes. Whadya gonna do if you are in Portland and your house is on fire in Miami? Cry is all I can think of...

I would just respite in hotels or perhaps get a camper by a lake for the summer. You can be fancy with Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Vail, CO. now and then, but to bank money, one probably needs to Motel 6-it as an 'Okie from Muskogee' more often than not too.

I thought this was a good plan until I saw no mention of women.

Where is the part of the plan that involves the womens?

Disclaimer: Lot lizards, Barflys, and Call Girls do not count.

I'd say the determination may be based on stuff. If you have car, motorcycle, tools, etc. you would need a place to store them. If you are going to pay storage rent, you might as well own the place. Once you have the place, then you have tax benefits. Living in the truck you lose the ability to claim per diem, either pre-tax or post, and there are already way too many threads on that subject. But having your own place also helps with other tax deductions, or items that will add into your total to allow you enough to itemize. And if you are real lucky, the property may actually appreciate over time.

what about renting a room, probably cheaper than a hotel and you still get the comforts of home and have a place to store your crap

I was told by the CA dmv when applying for a cdl that I needed to maintain a permanent residence (physical address -- not PO box). Otherwise I'd probably sell or rent out my home & live in the truck. Something you may want to confirm if you're from California...

I agree with CC get a house or apartment for now incase sometime down the road it doesnt work out with a trucking company, then at least you'll have a place to go.
