You don’t have to take 10 hours until you return to the location you normally report for work. You’re also allowed to return to your regular terminal empty without being in compliance with HOS. We are exempt outbound and inbound but I switch to Ag exempt when I can to fulfill my 10 hours off duty.
Drivers wouldn't READ the real regulations if it told them next week's lottery numbers. They ask some random driver the question, and whether that driver says OK or NO, they take it as gospel carved in stone. If a driver was told by his crack-addicted trainer in 1983 that you get a new 70 by pressing your right ear to the window they would believe it and claim that's what it says in the regs.
I appreciate all the different responses. I know I was just mainly venting about my crappy day. I didn't mean to bark at xHeavy about his response, that's just not what I wanted to hear. "Broke down fine, etc etc" isn't how it works when your schedule is so tight it cost me my second load of the day. I'm a company driver and I get paid a percentage of the load. There is no break down pay, the back-up truck was recently wrecked, and the other drivers can't break away from what they are doing to haul a load when I'm broke down. I'm sorry but in so many words I was told to suck it up, and that's just not how it works. If I'm broke down 7-8 hours worth on the side of the road, and I've happened to already hauled a load that took 8 hours, that just is what it is. That's not going to "get me replaced". I didn't get it done yesterday because of the breakdown, not from being lazy. The day only has 24 hours in it.
Also as a side note, I got my CDL before elogs and ELDs became a thing, and I don't know much about them. I was trained old school and I run old school. Any driving job I've had has had an exemption so I never bothered to learn much about logs or hours of service. I appreciate you all listening to me gripe and complain about the money I lost due to breakdowns.
