I only pulled vans and used lumpers for about 6 months, it did cause some arguements when the lumpers got through and I ask how they wanted the check made out. lol This was back in 99, I hear the lumper situation has changed some.
Yes. Unlike our rates, theirs have risen 100% since then. I paid $275 for a simple offload at CVS. At some other places they can go over $400. This is ridiculous, soon they'll charge more for their break down than we charge for the haul.
I did not have the temperment to deal with docks and bogus appointment times, so even though I bought 2 vans, they wound up parked in 6 months. Lumpers thinking I should pay them cash was just one of the problems, places requiring me to use a lumper was another one. appointments that only ment I had a set time to be there was a big one. lol
Since you're a company driver, you're just going to have to settle for what they're offering, unless you can negotiate something different.
If you company allows it, find out what the lumper cost would be then unload it yourself. My company would pay what the lumper charged and not some crap rate. Did my own for years. good workout and extra cash. Some docks don't care. Others made life hell for a driver unload. Broken pallet jack, 2 hours to unload, breakdown every pallet for no reason..etc. Before unloading, find out from your company what kind of receipt they require. Some customers will not honor a generic one written on a napkin.
