How can a company have 2 USDOT numbers?

Penske purchased Hertz Truck rental.

 

I'm trying to understand this because I have similar situation I'm try to understand. Parent company in SC and next company in Virginia. Do I need new MC as well or just DOT?

 

This is an old thread but if anyone sees this and can help me please reply. I have 2 dots that I got by accident. Two people in the beginning made a dot number for me not knowing the other was and there it was..it has been an issue throughout and now my insurance is insisting I make the one I use to away and use the other one or they are dropping me..I can't get insurance at that rate anywhere else..the other places are asking for 11000 dollars down. Can I deactivate the one and use the other? It seems that probably isn't how one is supposed to proceed, utin this situation what can I do
