how common is it to not have benefits in this industry??

I suspect that there will be a lot of people who won't be able to wrap their heads around that concept. Which is why I called PTO a "trap".

 

eh idk. 2nd year...i have 3 weeks paid vacation, several paid holidays (i typically get 2 paid days off per holiday bc night shift spans 2 days) and i pay nothing for benefits. health, dental, vision, 401k, profit sharing, company matched "savings accts". several benefits.

all companies i drove for offered benefits such as health, 401k, paid holidays and vacation. it's something one must establish before taking a job.

i was an operator for 11 years and a teamster for 4 years. ill never go back to a union.

 

Show me how to provide more for my kids and I'll jump right on it.

I don't know why it should be mandatory for the employer to provide benefits. Don't like your pay and/or benefit package, find another job.

I also think people get too hung up on benefits. For example, it's like somebody would rather have a $15 per hr job with benefits rather than a $25 per hr job with no benefits. At the end of the day, all that matters is dollar value of your pay, if it comes from cash money or in some sort of benefit.

 

The problem arises from those who don't see the problem in being uninsured. The amount of money that they'll have to pay when something happens to them will far eclipse the extra pay from most jobs. Without insurance you see people needing mountains of assistance that has to be paid for by our taxes.

 

A good benefit package helps attract and keep good drivers. It also helps keep the union out.
What our company pays out in benefits comes back to us in a solid and reliable work force.
That being said, there are some drivers who, no matter what you give them in the way of benefits, won't be happy and won't stay.
The family guys, the ones with children especially, know the value of good benefits.
