L.A. isn't as bad as it's reputation suggests. True that certain parts are bad crime wise, but that's mainly at night. You don't want to leave your truck parked unattended for more than 30 seconds. They probably won't steal it. Most of the street punks can't drive a golf cart much less 10 gears. But they will loot the inside. Violence can be a problem but it helps to sit up straight, and walk with your head up. Present an impression that says "Don't #@$& with me' and the clowns leave you alone I can write knowledgeably about Los Angeles because in my current land locked local driving status I'm driving through it every day. No, I don't like it. In fact I hate it.
Its not dangerous, there will be days deep snow closes 5 leaving you sit at Redding or Williamette a while. You have bigger natural dangers than just a couple of large mountains to run.
Northern California is no different than any other mountain region. Except for the fact that they will throw up the chain law and there's no place to park to avoid throwing them on. I'd advise taking it easy your first couple times over each season. And each season will thro something different at you....LoL. In spring you can have fog, rain, snow, ice, the whole gamut. Summer is nice but you can get fog and rain. Fall is just like Spring but in reverse. Winter is like the end of Fall until you get closer to Spring. You'll learn to tell how far your drives have kicked out by how tingly your buttocks feel....LMAO. As with any load or road, don't overdrive your experience and don't allow your accumulated experience make you ####y.
Along with the other areas mentioned above the Grants Pass area in Oregon has some steep inclines. Just remember: You can go down a mountain too slow as many times as you like....but only once too fast.
I lived in Oakland ... I lived in Los Angeles. People in LA hear I’m from Oakland and they back up a couple feet lol ... I would rather be in LA then Oakland. But driving a semi EVERYDAY in Los Angeles yes that would be nerve racking for sure.
I've been to every major city in the country. But I must admit only been to the Bay area a few times. The freeways, narrow city streets, hills in San Francisco, lack of truck stops, restrictions on roads, make LA look like paradise. Speaking of Oakland, I used to have a good girlfriend in LA who was from Oakland. She was a sharp woman as well as a beauty. I told her about the truck stop in southern Illinois with an embroidery shop. The one that calls itself XVIII, roman numerals for eighteen as in 18 wheels. I told her I might buy something from there maybe pick up something for her. She said it might be unwise to sport something with 18. People might think we were claiming affiliation with the notorious 18th Street gang. Oh, many years ago, at the height of his fame I met MC Hammer. I asked for an autograph for my niece. He was a cool guy.
Unless the famous grapevine is iced, it's a piece of cake. The only time I've had trouble with it in the countless passes I've done was with a truck with no engine brake and bad tractor brakes. The trailer had to do all the braking and started to smoke. I pulled into the Petro on the north side and called the boss that I wanted them fixed before going on. What I do hate is the check station on the south bound. I've been yanked in for level one twice in the last week.
... I'd rather eat a bullet Most fatiguing pain an the ### route in the united states. Lots of slow truck interactions, lots of no experience non drivers, lots of ### hats that have no common courtesy. Lots and Lots of trucks ... limited parking. Enhanced policing for profit ... just, no Every week in the winter will rot your soul, not because it is dangerous ... cali / oregon / washington shut down the road at the first hint of "danger" ... but, because people suck so bad on the route. Get a port gig, LA to Phoenix ... still sucks, just a lot less.
