You can always just apply see what happens. Most jobs I've worked that paid better than minimum wage I was completely unqualified for, but got the job anyway. Old Dominion might hire you. I hear they have a good retirement program. You might be able to get stock options (Ticker: ODFL), their company stock looks pretty good if you hold for the long term.
Most of my relatives are teachers/professors, including my sister and her husband. The relatives tried to pressure me into that and even had me in school at Peabody, which is part of Vanderbilt University. I sneaked off to the Navy Recruiter and signed up and got the heck out of there. Then to OTR trucking and that was for me. Can't adjust to office, factory, or anything like that. Love running the roads.
Only two years ago I thought I would be lucky to clear 60k when I retired. I would say that I would regret not starting sooner on my early 20s, but I would have either hit something or just blown all my money and having nothing to show for my money. I started at the right time. Trucking is very liberating when you have been working with a lot of people and putting up with their crap. Its probably the last job you do even when you are team driving where you can be your own man.. drive down the road, and deliver the freight. Sometimes I have to remember when I gets from the office and they mad I didn't call them and they are upset I didn't call them, they do a lot of work behind the scenes to make my job easier. I need to remember to make the call and their job and also my job is easier. They do a lot of work those dispatchers. Give them love and they will return it. Their job is probably harder so just make the call.
My problem is I put people in my shoes like the old wisdom suggests put everyone in your shoes but that doesn't work, experience has taught me very clearly that not every person is that way. Some people want you to call them. I shutter at any one calling me, but some people thrive. Those dispatchers are mostly really not against you. An easy day for you is an easy day for them. When I keep my dispatcher lady informed she does everything and makes my life so easy and she makes me money. She's fantastic.
I started with superior carriers running otr, usually out 7-10days (occasionally 14+)home 2-3. I chose to run that way because I have a wife and little kids so hometome was important to me. I could’ve ran harder. My gross was $30,000 from Jan 1- mid July. Started a new job running local and grossed $28,000. So total just under $60,000 gross. This is including the whole month of January being training pay still, and then two weeks of training the end of July. I should do $70,000+ this year fairly easily.
There is still money out there to be Made. If I can clear $50,000 then I am even. I also have 3 college degrees to make that junk
Not junk. It's still something to be proud of. And in some circumstances it makes humor more enjoying because you understand what you are listening too.
Well I am sure your education exceeds mine, I got two AA/AS degrees in general education. It was mostly out of personal interest kept getting side tracked taking other classes just out of curiosity. The way I see it with trucking I can drive long hours down interstates and think about all the things I learned in school... its like a mental playground. And best... am I really dreaming while driving, or am I catching glimpses of an alternate dimension? Is that really a kitty in the road?
