I'll give you a scenario where this comes into play in a bad way.

I started with Indian River Transport, traveling from Idaho to Tulare, CA to get a truck... and the new truck caught fire in the shop. Wow. So, I jumped into the truck with another solo driver, and we headed for Clovis, NM to get a truck for me.. there was a fairly new one sitting there.

He drove, and we stopped in Bakersfield for a meal, then he drove some more.. got tired, and I offered to drive. Sure, no problem. He'd driven 6-7 hours, I drove another 9-10... and I stopped to take a quick break, and figured I would rouse him from his slumber.... and he had never gone to sleep. he was on the phone with his girl in Florida the whole time, doing the Jerry Springer-style arguing and making up....

The guy was worthless to drive... so to heck with it - I called the DM, explained what had happened... the truck was a pete 379 with only one ned, so they had to buy us (me) a room... that was just dumb that the guy let his girl dominate a full 8-10 hours of his day, when we'd agreed to bust out the trip to Clovis...

If you can't regularly go more than a few hours without the leash, chain, apron strings, or whatever attached to your spouse or significant other... they don't belong on the road, or you need to be WITH them.

Alright, everybody. UGA79 is brand new to being a trucker's wife. I think we can cut her some slack here. I know how she feels.

There will be times when hubby can't call or answer the phone for one reason or another. Sitting around waiting for the phone to ring will drive you nuts. I am going to suggest you find something that will keep you busy. A hobby, friends, a job or whatever. This is not an easy job for either spouse. But getting all twisted up because hubby hasn't called in a day or two won't do anybody any good. It will give you ulcers and make his job all that much more difficult.

Swift is good about making sure messages get through to the drivers. But don't utilize that resource unless there is a good reason for it. Not hearing from your driver spouse in three hours is not a good reason. One of the kids crashing on a bicycle and scalping him or herself is. A squeaky door hinge is not a good reason. A house fire is. Your house. Not Gertrude's house down the street.

Trust him to do his job and know he will call when he can.

When I worked in receiving at a Wallyworld, one of the vendor drivers had a brother who worked at the Red Parrot in El Paso. He had countless unclaimed cellphones that he would sell you that he found in the private dance rooms. Guys never want to admit that's where they lost their phones so they never came back, lol!
