Excellent advice. I do ask upfront about detention and tonu. It's best to have it on the rate con, some do some don't. Asking them also gives you a feel for them. If they happily answer, probably good. I had one that cleared his throat alot and said they just changed the policy, but he wasn't sure what it was. Wrong answer.
Always read the rate con completely before you sign it, no matter how fast you need to move. Some will write the wrong amount, some have penalties for being late or for not checking in or not using macropoint, or not getting paperwork or billing to them by a certain date.
I had one that was nice as punch and when I got the rate con it said that if the receiver refused the product for any reason I agree to take it back to the shipper at some ridiculously low rate... so I moved on. No no no.
But there are a lot of good brokers out there and they look at detention as just a part of doing business. That's a good feeling when you have that.
