Assuming that I have my head on streight and am an honest hard working American who has been on disability for the past 4 years and wants to keep his medications. (One pill I take is $1,700.00 for 30 days). What would you do, sit at home and waste away or try to be contribute. I have drivin truck for 20+ years. Its what I love and know. Disability is not for me. Any input would be helpful. I have my class A, medical card and experence. I need a truck to drive. I dont want to drive for a large company. This is why I asked this wuestion in the Owner Operator Message. Im asking.

I don't think anyone had a clue what you were asking. I'm still not sure.

Here are my thoughts if I understand your question. I think you are wanting to drive. I see you are in Maine. I'm no expert at anything but I doubt there are a lot of regional jobs available in that area. You don't want to drive for a company. If you drive for an owner/operator I doubt you would have insurance or benefits unless he was leased to a company and then you would have to pay for it yourself. In that case you just as well be working for a company. If you are thinking you can get an under the table cash job and stay on disability - I don't think that is going to happen.

The market seems to be paying from .25 to .52 per mile with .36 to .42 being about average. Most owner/operators would pay a % and you would be an independent contractor and handle your own taxes with no benefits. That is what I would do if I had more than one truck. This is sad but it is what has become of the industry and I had friend working on % 30 years ago for owner/operators.

On regional runs 2200 -2500 miles seem to be typical. With 2350 miles at .39 cpm you would have $916.50 per week less taxes and insurance. That would leave about $700.00 per week. If you have to buy your medication that will be 56 % of your income which leaves about $1333 per month. That is 700 * 4.3333 = 3033 - 1700. I don't know what you receive for disability but this is a bad situation. Now if you could get released and did work for a company and did get insurance for $400 per month that would cover your perscription with a $100 co-pay then you would have $2533 per month.

I don't know how you will get hired by anybody while on disability. And depending upon the reason for disability I'm guessing it will be hard to get hired even if you are released. I can certainley appreciate the fact that you want to contribute but I don't know enough of your situation or what you are trying to accomplish to do more than offer my general thoughts and opinions.
