How long can I take off between OTR jobs?

    I wouldn't recommend any break longer than 6 months. Your options would be very limited.

    A lot of folks talk up 1 year experience like it's some magical number, but it's not that long. I didn't know squat after 1 year. I'm currently driving for a company that requires at least a year, and I see the stupid things my co- workers are doing. 1 year does not make you a valuable driver. 1 year followed by a long break is even worse.

    I don't have a crystal ball, but I suspect you would be wasting your time to train now.

    Yes, with many big corporate trucking outfits ... that also applies to drivers who held "local" or intrastate jobs for years - but never traveled across state lines.

    Some require 6 months in the last year, some in the last 3 years. Many are loosening those restrictions as they start to shed drivers thru CSA issues.

    Smaller companies will hire you though.
