At least 7 years. The IRS can audit you for the last 7 years (but usually only the last 3). I want those logs to prove where I was, when I was there and to justify my deductions.
Yes, I have been audited several times and the log books saved my bacon one way or another each time.

Seven in the U.S., 14 up here. I carry a second binder (I use looseleaf logs) and put past logs from the current trip in it. When I get home then the past pages go into a binder at home. I only ever show what I am required to by law, never anything more.

When one of the companies I drove for went out of business, they accepted my copies of the logs as proof that I worked there.

After the year you file and you shred them, 3 years later they show up to audit, what do you do?

I have log books somewhere that go back over a decade. I just hate to throw paperwork away.

The DOT came to a company drivers house and audited him personally. This same guy was fined for violations over a decade old.
That post was supposed to be in the joke or fairy tale thread right.
Bet in the truckstop that story begins with " you aint gonna believe this #### but."
