How many of you have run out of fuel?

That guage has been on E and the red light has been staring at me. You know the old saying running on fumes.....There has been a time or two that I barely made it to a fuel stop. Thinking to myself how much fuel is still left after running a thousand miles on the last fillup of 180 gal on two 100 gal tanks. Mpg aver about 5.5 loaded running hills....found a pilot, pulled up and pumped 190 gals to top it off. way I figured it, there was less than 5 gallons left when I got to the pump.

I guess it was my lucky day!

Ditto. Once, while I was pulling into the truck stop driveway!! So I was blocking one lane of traffic as well as the driveway. Fortunately the shop let me borrow a fuel can. Mechanic asked me what kind of truck, and advised me that the DD15 does not need to be manually primed, just hold the fuel pedal to the floor.

I was skeptical but he was right. I had always been told that I had to manually prime it. Better to hold the pedal to the floor as opposed to pushing a button 100 times.

 

That remainds of when I once pulled into some little Pilot (don't remember where it was it was it was beginning of my career 2 years ago) and there is that truck blocking acces to pumps.Ok cool I wait,but after little while I gently blow horn and some small dude comes up to me and starts mumbling something (I guess that guy had some speech problems).I was like "Ok buddy,whatever,have a good night" and he left.After another 10 min I got upset, got out of the truck,walked up to the truck blocking me and there is that small guy in the driver seat.He pulled down window,I said "Hey ,could you move this way or another,I want to fuel!"
And he says "I told you I ran out of fuel!".LOL

 

Old Iron, if dragging those hopper bottoms is anything like what I do (bulk pneumatic), you have to watch how much fuel you carry or else you'll have a little too much ground pressure.

I haven't run out, but I've been close.

 

We run too much ground pressure all the time lol. Another thing that had me in a bind was Pops ol Pete is hell for stout and you just can't drive it and not gas on it. Apparently I was to busy smiling when I passed the little fuel stop on the corner. I never realized I forgot till she sputtered

 

I've run out twice, once as a company driver, fuel gauge didn't work and company was getting rid of the truck and wouldn't fix it, they had fuel routing and wouldn't let me fill the truck for two weeks, ran out overnight with the apu running, the dip tube for the apu was lower then the trucks, apu would run but not the big motor. Second time was at home, had the truck out running in the driveway and it pulled all the fuel from the right tank and put it in the left, ran out with 125 gallons onboard. Took a while but found a piece of metal in the tank that would occasionally get sucked up against the suction tube and screw up the tank levels.

 

I ran out when I drove for Werner, in line @ iowa 80 in Walcott. I was dangerously low, got in line killed the truck. When the line moved forward the truck wouldn't crank. Werner wouldn't let me buy a diesel can and fill it / prime the engine. So I had to wait on a TA road service truck to do it. It was very embarrassing for me but since then I rarely go under half a tank unless I have to.

 

I've come close a few times in tractor trailer. Put like 180 in a Century a few times. Your fuel filter is basically ruined at that point as well.

However

When I changed over mixers from " The Beast " as everyone called it, my avatar, one of the last manual Pete's, to a KW with a high winding CAT, ran out right under the batch plant once, like 3 seconds after I got batched. Had I run out while I was getting batched, that would have been major F/U lol.

That's why I loved my 670. That dude had twin 150's.

Now that's a catastrophe!!!! That beats running out of fuel hands down!
