It all seemed like such a blur when I last delivered in Delaware that I forgot about both the I-95 highway and the toll near that bridge. I was happy to get out of Delaware, and the last thing that I remember is crossing over into Maryland to park at the TA.

I'm not an old timer. I've never really driven a truck before until just a few years ago. I actually taught myself how to float gears. Well, I read about it online about how it should work and then I practiced every now and then. I've floated on upshifts and on downshifts with very minimal or no grinding.

There are two great places to practice floating: in the parking lot of a truck stop and in rush hour traffic. On this Prostar the magic number seems to be around 1300 rpm. What I do is start off in first or second gear. I grab the stick and apply a little steady pull to it. Since it's in gear with the accelerator pushed it normally doesn't pop out of gear. Around 1300 reps, while still gently pulling the stick, let off on the accelerator and you should feel the stick go to neutral. Then quickly pop it into the next gear and push the accelerator again.

I actually surprised myself when I did it the first time.

I still double clutch the majority of the time though.
