Not the issue, you have the right for your person and property to be secure, the sleeper is the same as your home, it comes with right to privacy, a mechanic working in there requires you to know about it ahead, if you know your truck is going in for service I also believe that you need to exercise the option to secure your stuff in a way they need not go thru it. Even my bedding is put away if the truck is going in for service. If they are going thru the frig when they should be replacing a window is wrong, they have no reason or business to be in the frig.
I have lockable storage for my stuff, whats inside a locked container is none of the companies business. Maybe its a Glock model 17, but then maybe its a Colt 1911, in either case no of there business.

Then they could replace the bedding.

I know for a fact that the maintenance people go into the sleeper area to change out that filter underneath the bunk lid. If you happen to leave your 24" machete where they can see it, they might take a picture or not. Sometimes a driver will store a beer in the fridge, highly illegal by the way, and get busted when he forgets it's there. At one company's orientation they even told the story of a guy who collected beer cans of various craft breweries he encountered on this travels and was fired for that, even though the cans were empty.

When I turn the truck over to maintenance, I take my GPS and a backpack full of my stuff with me. I leave my luggage, as it only clothes mostly. Anything of value, I take, but I travel lightly. Always remember the idea ; it's good to be able to carry everything of yours if, for some reason, you have to leave that truck for good at some point.

Don't confuse courtesy with legal rights/obligations.

If the truck belongs to someone else, in the absence of any agreement to the contrary, the owner typically has absolute right of possession to that property. Your personal belongings, while they may be contained within that property, should be exempt from search unless you have agreed to a policy which allows it.

Due to the aspect of trucking being a regulated industry, enforcement has limited authority to do certain inspections. Inspection of the sleeper to ensure conformity is allowed. Searching your personal belongings would normally require probable cause.

Access to certain facilities may require your adherence to policies which allows the facility to search your personal belongings. You can choose to decline which may lead to refusal of entry or expulsion.

You have very limited rights at any international border and the search of your belongings (including electronic devices) and person is a distinct possibility.

I keep my personal possessions in lockable containers, never had a problem. when going into Canada I keep my Glock in my closet at home, just for fun the locked gun box always gets a close look.

I had a tool box with an expensive set of stainless steel reducers and adapters that went into my car after every day, I never knew when I'd come in and find that my tractor was dispatched on some 'emergency' and I would be using a different one.

Anytime a tractor went into the shop, the driver would pull almost everything. If i wasn't nailed down, it wouldn't be there the next morning...

    How very "observant" you are.

Mr @Moose Holland, if that is indeed your concerns, PM me.

NO offense taken, I get your point but let's be honest, how many are really go through crap like what the OP assumes?

Drivers today are not selfreliante and most, not all but most don't view this as a profession, just a job to make money.

    Well don't really agree.

OK so you are not in this industry and assume what some may say goes on is going on.

I've worked at bases and other high security place, so I get what you are driving at.

I don't get the foreign language thing, but I will offer you some advice, don't think too hard into this because it isn't as important as other things.

By the way, I have had my entire truck inspected at bases, at nuke sites, at chemical plants, at military suppliers, at tank testing facilities, at military aircraft testing facilities, at a place in the north east where they make rockets to shoot down things and at the international border.

At the border, they don't ask permission, they tell you to park and get out of the truck and they don't care what you think. They will do an inspection of EVERYTHING including your personal belongings and if you give them crap, they will put it on the ground and tell you to clean up the mess. Find something, no matter what it is and they take it and/or arrest you.
