as Oscar the KW already write it shows diagram of retarder and engine brake braking power on speed and rpms

retarder usually start to brake around 40kmh at full power on new trucks even on larger speed because of extra long drive axles

this is diagram for new mercedes truck with om471 engine ( dd13) with normal engine brake, with stronger engine brake and with retarder in both cases , strongest output is 1020hp

this retarder is water one, secondary

    it is only about 460hp

for example hydraulic voith retarder ( for mercedes volvo and renault) have 812hp scania have 885hp

and question for you CAT brake saver is this primary or secondary retarder?

Yes we know why automated boxes do this and they don't do this all the time.
They never do it to look cool.
They do this because of scientific principals not because they suffer from pygmy pipi syndrome.
Some drivers do and this is abuse , just like accelerating flat out often is but auto cruse does it when its called for.

Rules are made for the obedience of fools and the guidance of the wise.

As everyone else the retarder and exhaust brake is used for every stop except emergency but they are also on auto both so they come on every time I touch the brake. Of course I also try to roll so much as possible before the stop
