This is a very important question...one that could save your life...

Your body and mind needs breaks from constant sitting and stooping...

Unfortunatly they make it practically impossible for drivers to excercise out on the road...not at rest areas or truck stops...

So you have to take the initiative on your own....
You have to tell yourself...'Is it better for me to get fat, devolope diabetes, heart disease??
Or should I get out once a day and job or walk or jump rope or do jumping jacks...

It can feel awkward at first...(get a headset and radio or ipod) but with music playing...all outside distractions fade away...

Remember...you want a life after trucking...you don't want trucking to claim your time, health, moral and body....

Your goal should be that when you step outside that truck...no one knows you drive a truck...
Maybe they think your a life guard...or Rescue ranger...or dietrition....

Bottom line, don't sacrifice your health cause your afraid of what a few drivers might whisper about you jogging or jump roping...

If you count running your mouth and jumping to conclusions as exercise, then I ought to be in better shape than Arnold Schwarzenegger!

I know one time I started jogging...and the next thing you know it was like Rocky Balboa...others started jogging behind me...I was simply going in circles around the truck stop...but I guess others felt inspired...

Next thing you know...I felt like Rocky Balboa leading a crew...

Any movement counts! Park in the back of the truck stops this will give you a little more walking distance. I actually had a doctor tell me that short bursts of sprinting is actually better for you than jogging for an hour. Just run as fast as you possibly can back and forth a few times. You will be surprised how sore you get! Put your feet on your truck steps and your hands on the ground and do push-ups. Get underneath that trailer and grab a cross member and do pull-ups. Sit-ups you can do in the sleeper. A gallon of water makes for a good dumbell. You can also fill your duffel bag with tools and can goods, grab it by the handle and do curls. Again on your truck steps sit on the steps with your back facing the truck, place your hands on either side of you palms down, stretch your legs out and place them on the ball of your heel. Now go up and down kind of like a backwards push-up by bending your elbows. Go down as far as you can. Actually called a dip. Another good one is stand with your legs about a foot and half apart keep your feet flat on the ground and do squats. Lunges are also good. Stand and step out with one leg and bend into it until your other knee touches the ground and just keep alternating.

Guys these are just a few really simple and quick exercises I used to do every single day. In 20-30 minutes you can do a really great workout and you will notice a difference! I guarantee. You can also just do a short version of these if pressed for time.

If you want to stay in shape, go to work for Grocery Supply, MBM or some company where unloading the truck is part of the job. Getting paid for staying in shape? That could be the perfect job.

As far as taking a break? What you do on your off time is up to you. I have seen many a weary driver "take breaks" until I had to fire him from being late too many times.

When going through the scales, pick up your weights off the floor and hold them so your truck will not be overweight.
