Instead of starting more threads and such, you might contact your insurance agent, or Midwest Truckers in Springfield for better information. Many of posters on here are from other states.

I have known this for years. Go slow enough to not get injured. If you don't know, ask! If you need help with it, ask! If you don't think it's safe, Stop & ask. Workmans comp will follow you like an un welcome house guest. "Your a risk, we don't need you. Thanks for your application." AKA we will call you.

Sorry, I am just a wife.. New to this page.. Trying to figure everything out.. My other threads didn't seem to be getting and responses. I just figured I was putting in the wrong thread.. I have contacted my insurance, it has been costing us on average 10grand per truck driver a year. I figured someone may know some secrets on how to get into a better pool or something..

Most owner/operator have one truck. There are some others, but they are in Kansas, Pennsylvania, Georgia and others.

    Your insurance is the start.

Midwest Truckers should be a plus. I believe they are on Dirksen in Springfield.

Shop around. Stuck in a pool you just have to tough it out until you can get out of it.

I don't think there are any "secrets". Welcome to the world of business in the modern "injury happy" USA. And truckers have one of the highest if not the highest risk rates of any group of employee types. It's expensive and the alternatives are expensive and risky.

You might try looking into "leasing" your employees. It's kinda like a glorified payroll service. The benefit is you can lease them from a state with much cheaper rates.

My only tip would be to move out of this state! I know that's my plan! Everything here cost to much, not just workmans comp.

Now you know why some of these places want to see a WC cert. as they know that most 0/0's don't carry it on themselves. It opens the company they are hauling for up on liability.
