I've come down berthoud pass on 40. It's doable but very twisty curvy. Full u-turn type curves.

Screenshot_20210115-193427.png If their is no snow storm for Eisenhower tunnel then 70 to Utah and up 191,6,89. It's very scenic. It's also slow going up to tunnel over the mountain and back down. Not many truck stops after denver to Utah State line. If their is high winds in wyoming it can be better they getting blow over. Eisenhower tunnel up their is high chain up area in the winter. So hopefully no snow storm. It like 11,500 feet high at the tunnel and slow pulling heavy trailer and slow going down to keep the brakes cool.

Not sure why you're mentioning Casper. That isn't anywhere near on route.

Just need to check road and weather conditions and make a judgement call. Wyoming is the preferred route IF weather and road conditions are decent because it's much flatter than I-70. You can take US-30 around Elk Mountain if the winds are strong and you have a light load, not to say US-30 can't have unsafe road conditions. Sometimes the I-70/US-191/US-6 route is the better way to go.

I think she meant Cheyenne, but I've seen other people refer to the wrong city in a state.

Well my last trip was the first opportunity to fully grasp this wind crap. And I was on the Casper side of the shut down. Now I was planning to go 25 North but didn't have so much fun with that section so....looking for options

This looks absolutely stupid. Maybe next summer I'll check it out but I still remember hiding under a blanket in TBE back of a blazer in the late 70s convinced the little Jayco camper wasn't gonna come around one of those hairpin up to Piles Peak and we were doomed to tumble down across all 99 switchback full of cars and EVERYBODY was going to die LOL

I used to have to run a placarded tanker from Sonora, Tx to Vernal, Ut and I never found a good way to get there during the winter. I was told not to run 70 to 9 to 40. 70 to 13-64-40 was what the boss recommended. I usually angled up through Cortez to 70 to 6 then took 191 out of Helper to 40 then east to Vernal. Not bad but that 191 from Helper to Duchesne is a pretty good climb. But I knew they ran those Rocky Mtn doubles up and down there so as long as it wasn't snowing it was ok. Running a loaded tank in the snow sucks because when you start uphill, all the liquid runs to the back of the trailer and you lose the weight off of the drives.

I did Frac and Cement near Vernal and HATED winter out there. Hauling a 85k+ setup is bad enough on the big roads, it's hell on those smaller routes.
