Hello my neighbor to the North. Sure is a great thing this global warming isn't it. I live in North Carolina and I do have a secret for why I haven't had any troubles with ice since I started driving. I just won't drive in it. I was raised in the south where we can't hardly drive on dry road much less ice. Just look at all the folks off in the ditch and stuff. I would much rather find a place to park when it first starts getting bad and go to sleep. Fortunately I have worked for companies that didn't mind this and actually encouraged it.

Hi N4... well you would have a LONG vacation up here... roughly from mid November until mid April...!
Never thought I would adapt, but I just go slower... We had 0F as our max temp today, and seems that its going to be much like that for the rest of the week and next week with snow!
My main problem today was that my fifth wheel lock wouldnt lock... fought and fought with it... but finally got it to lock in place with each trailer I pulled... phew!

Sounds rough, but we do tend to adapt to changing situations. I would probably do the same if I were to drive up there. I guess I would just rather park since I don't drive in it very often.

well, i'm gonna put this out there and there will be someone who will say i'm full of it.when you feel that distinctive rumble in the steering on icy roads-you best be under 20mph,anything over that and you have minimal control of the truck.a group of us were running from Amarillo to Lubbock on the 27 (ice was about 4-5 inches thick) and we stopped at the Rip's in Tulia for coffee.when we got out of our trucks,3 of us fell on our tails(myself included).we all looked at each other, laughed, and said "we're driving on this stuff?!" you will find that even though others will go faster,if you follow my words, the chance of losing control are slim. the main thing to remember is that once the truck breaks loose and starts sliding-you're screwed, odds are you will not regain control of it untill it comes to a stop. DRIVE REAL SLOW if you are unchained!!!!

my favorite icy experience was setting my tractor brakes in the rest area just past laramie wyoming during a storm.... I bundled up and started to walk away from truck when I noticed it was moving about 2" a second...

just drifting across (and downhill) the parking lot...

you can have a "collision" even with the brakes set and the motor off!

The worst is the first snow of the year when there's no salt on the roads yet or right after a huge huge rain storm and all the salt is gone.

We haven't had any snow yet but it'll come soon enough. In the meantime, the temps are close enough to zero that they're salting now so it shouldn't be too bad.

Just remember to slow down, no sharp moves, lots and lots of room between you and the next guy, winter tires and no slamming on the brakes.

If you start to slip going uphill, ease off on the gas a bit, don't floor it, and you might make it to the top. I can drive my car in anything but ice. Makes me really nervous to have Mike driving in the winter - he has much less driving experience in general than I have (I've had a license and driven tons for 27 years - he's only really driven a lot in the past six years).

We don't chain here - it's illegal (would ruin our roads - they just close them if it's that bad) but the spring stuff is horrid - often wet snow and packs to ice really fast.
