here in ne ky. first of the week had a emt work a wreck, before they could leave the scene a loaded coal truck hit the ice up road and hit them killed both. his buddy that was running with him turned his over trying to miss them all. big mess. could have waited a couple more hours and had clear roads. i feel for all of them.

Oh Poppy thats awful. Sorry to hear about that.

My rule is to park it until I can be comfortable. Ice is park it. Nobody had the talent to control a tractor trailer on a solid ice road. If you have to make any change in direction or speed it can be impossible. Like was said by others. There is no freight worth any life.

This week I80 in Iowa between MM237 and 265 has been real bad.
Lots of blowing snow and cold. Monday night I parked just short of this area due to other accidents either just cleaned up or being worked.
Tuesday morning roads were not ideal but you could run. Again people were driving too fast (4wheelers) and going into the ditch. At the 249 there was an SUV that blew through the median and was TBoned by a big truck.. Couldn't find anything on this accident but rumor was it was a fatality. By the looks of the vehicle I wouldn't doubt it.
After going past that started up I380. Traffic was backed up for over 2 miles. Come to find out there was a Plow Truck in the hammer lane and the 4 wheelers were afraid to pass.
Friday night on I80 at the 260 both lanes turned to ice. Everyone slowed down and the radio was a buzz with cars off in the ditch. At the 254 there was all kinds of Emergency vehicles there. A tanker was in the hammer lane stopped. The left front corner of the tractor was a mess. In the median was an SUV torn to heck. From what I could gather the SUV blew the median and was Tboned by the Tanker truck. Couldn't find anything on this either but heard that it also was a fatality. The rescue crew was standing on the shoulder not in any kind of hurry so I wouldn't doubt that either.
Started up 380 and road conditions had improved to being wet. At the 7 there was an accident on the south bound side. Well the 4 wheeler in the lead on the north bound side must of thought wow an accident I better hit the brakes. All well and good accept they were bunched up and the last car in the line didn't check up soon enough and ran head on into the guard rail on the bridge.
The lesson in all of this. Slow down. Leave a lot of following distance. By doing this you won't be likely in a pack. If it just gets too silly park it for a while and let the plow trucks clean the roads up. -
Sounds like there are a few smart drivers out there still!!! So very glad to hear it. I feel the smae way. My boss gave me four new sets of chains last summer,I told him he's getting them back in the same condition I got them!!!!

When the roads are really bad, your chances of an accident increase. There is alot less paperwork and headaches when you park to let the roads get better.

I guess I never thought ice to be too fun. You get on a road that is not a road anymore, it's just a solid sheet of thick ice, and you're in for a thrill. I've done it - solid ice - and well, for the sake of getting a load somewhere, probably ain't worth it. I did it here and there to get a load somewhere to make the buck, but I wouldn't do it now.
To be honest, I thought driving through a tornado was much more terrifying than driving over ice. -
I agree with all the sentiments to get off the ice, but today, I80 westbound in Wyoming at the 190 mm - heavy wind, lots of blowing snow, road had been pretty good, going about 45mph, slight uphill. Tractor front moves a bit left - I 'm thinking wind push, then more, then I realize I am starting to jack - backed off, the trailer brought me back and straighted out. Black ice under the snow - - - lots of 30-35mph while I got my stuff back together. Otherwise, the roads were pretty well cleaned up all the way across, but - -- going to back off more on the blowing snow. Wyoming is not my friend.
