Why? Sometimes ya gotta do what'cha gotta do, when ya gotta do it. You're wanting to get into a lifestyle that will keep you away from home for weeks or more at a time. Training away from the home-20 might just be a way to get used to it, or discover you want to change your mind. Think of schooling away from home as an adventure. Big truck truck drivin' school SHOULD be fun, as well as educational. If you're already dreading being away from home, IMO, you need to do a LOT of research here at this site to read what other experienced Big truck truck drivers have to tell you, as well as NewBees who relate their training experiences. Having applications already submitted prior to attending school is an excellent idea. Chances are you'll be pre-hired, pending graduation if all your ducks are in order.
Shock - sometimes it's an economics thing. Example: Schneider would sent me to Fontana CA for training. Sure, they'd pay to get me there and for a place to sleep - but I'd have to dig up food on my own. At my current level of employment, I can't afford that. Taking a cooler full of food is impractical, too. So, if you have a choice, you stick closer to home
