I have a Motorola Atrix 2 from AT&T that I can tether to my $300.00 HP laptop for unlimited internet, I have 4G in some spots, but most are 3G, never had a problem.

companies are cracking down on the teithering,it's only a matter of time before they make it so you cant anymore. mobile hotspot is good but if you have a mobile hotspot through verizon im pretty sure they dont have a 2g plan, lowest per month plan is 5g and i dont even use 2g's a month so i wouldnt do that.i plan on keeping my verizon phone package but probably go with a virgin mobile hotspot $10 for ten days,i know they dont have very good service out west but all i need it for is online bill pay so i can do that during the time im not out west.

Verizon for phone. Rarely lets me down. As for a laptop. I'm guessing you just want it for email, news, and so on. That case i recommend a small.netbook. they can do all your laptop needs for most cheaper. Other option is a tablet.
