Mexican carriers have has US DOT and MC for years. only on a limited basis pre-NAFTA but pretty much nationwide since.

Canadian's have driven in the US forever! My second dispatch job had a phone at the end of the desk for a French Canadian carrier yet I remember in the late 70's having to relay at the boarder for US trailers going into Canada.

Look up cabotage. It allows foreign companies with foreign drivers to pick up and deliver in the US only when the other end is in their country. No US to US loads. I don't know if it has rules on foreign drivers for US companies though. It does allow internal US shipping if the driver is US and the company is Canadian.

There are MANY MX CDL drivers operating in the US, driving DOT/MC filed trucks. We see the insurance for them all the time, because there is a limited market capacity to write drivers where you cannot verify driving experience and mvr record. They ARE legal.......we charge a fortune to insure them, because it's hard to get them to come back across the border to testify when the inevitable law suits are filed and litigation follows.

yeah I don't see why not. You know Americans are allowed to drive in Canada - heck I even checked back in the day and it was ok for my daughter to drive up there on her learners permit...

    It depends on the circumstances.

I have previously leased my trucks to US carriers and therefore had US registration and plates. One of the same carriers had Canadian drivers in their company trucks. Another driver worked for a US carrier, crossed the border to pick up his truck and loads, crossed the border to deliver, then returned the truck to the carrier's terminal and crossed the border to return home.

So long as cabotage rules are not being broken and everything else is as it should be, it can all be perfectly legal.

We can drive in Mexico too, but most drivers do not want too.

I figure the insurance would be a lot higher to go down there.

Of course not. They won't let me bring back a trailer half full of people and half full of cocaine back with me...why else would you want to go? Lol

A couple of years ago we were contacted by a Mexican company that buys used construction equipment. They had a couple of D-7s in our area and wanted them brought into Mexico.
We asked our insurance carrier about coverage and, after he got through laughing hysterically, quoted us a rate based on miles run in Mexico that would have sucked every cent of profit out of the haul.
The insurance guy told us some real horror stories about getting into accidents down there with drivers being thrown in jail and trucks being impounded.
We're too old for cheap thrills so we took a pass on the whole thing
