I really think that the no-confidence vote was a huge mistake on the opposition's part. For years, I voted Liberal, but that ended after Chretien left. Do I agree that we are seriously overpaying for the F-35 fighters? You bet your sweet bippy I do. Not that I favor this alternative, but for the price of ONE, yes, ONE F-35, we can have 12 Mig-29s. Unless you want Iggy or Layton, and therefore another minority/coalition government, vote Harper. At least a majority can get things done.
I agree on the voting for Harper, just to get a #### majority. However, for those who aren't sure, they can try this out. http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canadavotes2011/votecompass/
If you ever want a party that isn't elected with money alone, don't vote Conservative. Harpers plan to eliminate government funding of political parties is a dangerous step to getting a government run totally with private (read corporate) money. Running for election is not cheap and I would hazard a guess if you ran with just the $1.75/vote you get. You wouldn't be noticed. You really need to think through the economics of this. If it was gone there would no longer be a voice for the poor and working class. Corporations would be the political force and the government would bend to them more so than they do now. This is why corporate donations were capped, to prevent this type of thing. Harper know that the Conservatives would have an insurmountable advantage over all other parties. Denadii Cho, you think the military is a joke? Know anybody in it? I lived in a military town for 10 years, I know lots of folks in the military and do some wish they had more money? Sure. Name a business or group that doesn't. But calling them a joke is uninformed and disrespectful. I want to point out a few other facts. In the last 5 years the Harper government has racked up the biggest deficit in Canadian history. The last time it was ever close to being this big was at the end of Mulroney's reign. If we look to the south we see a privately funded government who racked up a huge deficit as well and now they have to make some huge cuts. We see this all over the states right now. Notice what is being cut? Education, health care, social programs. Notice what is not being cut? Bailout money for banks, bailout money for blue chip companies like GM, military spending. I am not anti business, nor anti military. But the balance is being tilted too far. Now Ignatief is a complete idiot too if you ask me. Book smart like crazy, but too stupid to realize promises that don't have any chance of working are even worth spouting off. Another minority Conservative government would end up pushing Harper out and Ignatief out.
That survey has been accused of having a very definite Liberal bias, in part because it has been created by former advisors to Ignatieff. Having taken it, I tend to agree. Not only did it say my views are more aligned with the Liberals (which they are not), but it said my views are closer to the Bloc. I answered most of the questions exactly the same as the Conservatives' platform... yet my views are most like the Liberals and the Bloc? Umm... no.
You make some valid points, but I am going to disagree with the portion I highlited. Or, perhaps, I am suggesting it should be amended. The Conservatives and Liberals would have an equal advantage over the other parties. For most of Canada's history the big business interests (read: eastern) have favoured the Liberals. However, they also have a tendancy to fund either party more favourably in order to keep things relatively close. If big corporate funding is not flowing to the Liberals it is a direct reflection of their confidence in the current leadership. Although there is an alleged right-wing and Conservative bias of big business (supposedly similar to the U.S.), Canada's political history proves otherwise. IMHO YMMV
History proves that the conservatives get more corporate money. And as far as your eastern reference I don't know about that. Look at the big oil in Alberta. $2billion in tax subsidies
No No NO! Don't think I'm mocking our troops. Never! I'm talking about Canada's military as a military force. As a force it's wimpsville. The people in our military forces are there because they love our country. I have nothing but praise for them. But as I said they have NOTHING to work with. No real backing of the government that is supposed to support them. They are made totally powerless to do anything but the work of a common policeman. Or laborer in an emergency. The way the government supports the troops puts them always in the position of one bringing the knife to the gunfight.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures Read some facts and get back to me. Not the highest, but far from the lowest. Middle of the road spending on military. Well balanced is what I would call that. Canada is not a warring nation. People gripe and moan about governments wasting money here and there yet you want us to spend what 5% of our GDP on warring in other countries?
We are in Afganistan and now Libya, how are we not a warring nation? Updating our military will create jobs. Vote Harper.
