IRP is the one thing I use a service for. Mostly because I live in IL and have heard horror stories of the state employees screwing something up in some way or another. The people I use deal with it all the time and know what to watch out for and how to handle it and their fees are very reasonable.
An example of things getting screwed up happened on my IFTA, last year all my IFTA stuff came addressed to "Christina D. Esteves - Danny Knapp Trucking....". I finally got this straightened out, all I can imagine is this was actually the persons name who was filling out the form, or else the person was entering data for one, got interrupted, and started again or something.
With the IRP, it costs me less to pay my service than it would in gas to get there. They check for potentially headache inducing clerical errors like this since the people working there are too incompetent and don't care too. And they know how to resolve these problems.

That was to add 46 more states. I told them that was a load of BS.
I ran the estimator and it came up to $1540. When I opted to submit the paperwork directly to the DMV, my plate renewed at $1540 and some change. I mean the estimator was so close it wasnt funny.
Yet the permit people swore up and down it would be $2600.
I shared the estimator site with them and they acknowledged they too only came up with around $1540.
..it was at that point I decided to stick to doing things myself.
Once I get an understanding of this I will be better off.....
Or maybe I need to find a better service..one that understands Wisconsin...since the company located
here in WI seemingly didn't.
dannythetrucker, RedForeman, BigBadBill and 1 other person Thank this. -
mine gives me a bill generated by the state ($1747 for 48 states this year) and has me get a money order made out to the secretary of state for that amount. Their fee is seperate, $78 this year. I think that's well worth it since they physically go to Springfield, IL and make sure everything is correct before leaving. I'm sure there are plenty of states you can do it yourself, even online. But IL is different, lol.

WI does allow online access but if you make ONE mistake...no matter what it is, and they have to manually correct it...
You get slapped with a wet noodle and they then flex their muscle and yank your access.
Don't ask me how I know this..

Luckily, the IRS and IRP offices are just a few miles apart in Canton, Ohio. So, I head up there to do both as my renewal will be the same month HUT is due.
My plate is not a renewal plate. I was leased to another carrier who handled the plate prior to me going under my own authority. So, I've always had real miles. For jurisdictions I didn't drive in, I could estimate based on Ohio estimates. I'm certain it was Florida and Maine. I will be dropping California. As my truck only has one year left, and I'm not upgrading it. Plus, I haul a reefer, and even though it's 2013, I do not want to begin to deal with CARB crap.
My IRP cost me about $1700 for 48 states last time for my first full year. From my invoice, it appears that the estimated miles simply were added to my total miles and the percentages per state were figured from there. And the state IRP was the only doing the calculations and the forms is clearly marked either "estimated" or "actual" for each state. Was told if I wanted a state with no miles, I had to enter the estimated miles in the estimated box for that state.
Now, in a while when my last year is added, I will have many states with zeros. Unless I run more to the northwest and midwest. So, I'll see how that goes later.Hanadarko Thanks this. -
sitting in TN IRP as I type. The fun never stops.

Most of the time when I go to the TN IRP office, it can take up most of the deay. This time it only took a couple of hours, but I had already emailed in my information so I only had to sign in and wait until they put everything into the computer. Bill, you need to check to see if you can get set up to file your IFTA and IRP online. It can save you time and you will avoid having to make a trip to Nashville. It can be better to go in person if this is the first year you file in Tennessee. They tend to be a bit slow, but if you can get to know one or two people in the office, it can help things to move more smoothly. I have dealt with them for many years. It will get more interesting when they move downtown to their new offices. It is at least easy to park at their present location. It will be an additional hassle once they move downtown. You will need to park at garage, have a brisk walk and go through all their fancy new security procedures.

When are they moving downtown? I hadn't heard about that. I wish they would make their minds up & stay in one place. I guess you remember when they were in the andrew jackson bldg. What fun times those days were.
-
TN must have torn a page from the GA plan. Move to a less accessible and even more crime-ridden location with about half the parking, then install a security gauntlet at the door to add even more delay to an already tedious wait in 2+ lines process.
