But according to this, maybe not. If not, you can upgrade to either the drilled or non drilled and use nozzles. But looks like you have to have closed end rods to use the steel top pistons.

Confirmed with a dealer. Both of my MK engines are 16.5:1 and have cooling nozzles. I don't know why people say that only BK and PK are premium

Because Detroit only classifies PK, BK and HK as premium...might have something to do with it?

I've ran hundreds of serial numbers and there where a lot of MKs built with piston cooling nozzles but it's probably like 30%

Do all MK's come with 16.5:1 pistons?

Good question. My understanding was the 16.5 were just a progression in piston design, like the rods. From what I understand my 98 PK had 15:1 pistons, and oil coolers. The next year, like my current 99, it was 16.5:1 pistons to combat white smoke caused by Low nox programming, injectors seem to be connected also. My 7650s and a few others are 9 hole, as opposed to 8 hole spray tips. Supposedly the 9 hole is for better atomized fuel. I’ve read the 8 hole have better power. Other injector differences are angle, either 155 or 160. I have no real idea. Just things I’ve read.Ive probably got it all wrong. Lol. I’d like to know for sure myself. I’m sure you do also, since you’re buying new parts anyway. Being able to pick the best parts for your overhaul. I didn’t have much time, when choosing. My last Trucks inframe was done at Freightliner Knoxville. I got the Detroit Kit the vin called for. They said a custom ordered kit would take weeks to get. Assured Me I’d get the new style pistons. Whatever that meant. Live and Learn.

Yes, all MK and BKs are 16.5:1. TKs, PKs, GKs, and on highway HKs are 15:1.

    Rideandrepair and DUNE-T Thank this.
