I am a 60 year old school bus driver looking to go CDL this summer. I feel great, my BP is controlled w/ meds and I am excited about my last career move. I see these "sag pant" kids on my bus every day. They are arrogant, rude and probably won't be worth a warm bucket of spit by the time they get to my age. But then again.... I was a Hippie!
You'll do fine. When I was in San Antonio Swift Academy the older guys (55+) did much better on the written and driving test than the young ones. Out of 17 people I started with in my class, 7 made it out of school. There were 14 people under 55 and 3 older than 55. All three of the older crowd made it and only 4 of the younger ones made it. Now we are out with mentors, the 3 older ones are still in. The mentor process is the hardest part of Swift. 2 of the 4 young ones threw in the towel. It just goes to show how idiotic the OP is in his post.
OK, here's my take....(from a 66 yr old). I can do non-physical things as well as anyone, however the difference is I'm not a young buck and I admit it, so climbing, throwing tarps ,intermediate excersise, ain't as easy as 30 yrs ago, but here's the difference........since I've experienced life and everything that comes with it, I do, in fact, know way more than a 20 yr old does, even though he thinks he knows everything there is to know, right ? So unless I have a medical condition, I'll get the job done, SAFELY, albeit a little slower, because I realize driving fast/taking risks/being a hothead/trying to impress anyone/knowing my limits is part of lifes knowledge that I gained over the years. You won't see me making a u-turn on an interstate/driving thru a truck-stop 30 mph with jake/mouthing off to customers/tearing up equipment/falling asleep etc, because I know that it gets you nowhere. As far as starting out at age 65, I somewhat agree with the OP, but not totally. Depends on the situation. I prefer to "slow down" at this age, as in "time clock" to "rocking chair" to "grave". Not "time clock" to "grave".
