I can't tell you what they may make in your particular area, BUT, in Southern California, it's paid on distance from the port. Short hauls, "maybe 75-100" dollars..longer distances, not much. But, we will throw in a free turban..

I wonder if they know that they are less likely to blow out if they're not running 90mph all the time?

They are less likely to blow out if you really check them for air.

If your an O/O and can find a company paying percentage then you can do alot better then most people think. You can easily average more then these guys running for .90cpm plus FSC and on top of that half of your miles are usually empty miles. Stay away from companies who only wanna pay "Loaded" miles as the trips are 99% of the time paid as round trip wether from the railhead, the port, or an in-land port.

Why is that the first thing always thrown out?? Most of the trucks arent pretty but mechanically they are very sound trucks.

Are the tires VERY close to being illegal? Yes they are!!

But why?? Because running locally and very heavy at times they wear them out quickly.

I will be the first to admit alot of the trucks look like death traps but they arent!

People also need to remember that we arent running 3k miles a week and 3k miles from home. So the need for a 50k to 100k dollar truck isnt needed!

As far as the recaps, well not much can be done about that as tire choice is controlled by the rail/steamship lines.

If you are paid 1.50 a loaded mile, but only one way, you are actually getting. 75 cents. Tried to explain that to a bull hauler that was getting paid 2.00 per mile, he never did get it.

I dunno but the port rats and rail can haulers are usually the ones driving like idiots around town since they're paid by the load. I know a guy in the Portland, OR area who runs a can hauling outfit and pays 80% revenue + 100% of the FSC and he suggested it's more trouble than it's worth to get into as far as buying yourself a day-cab truck and dealing with the mountain of paperwork in Oregon just to go can hauling. (I thought about it obviously...sounds fun in theory to work a day job with your own truck.)

The O/O's at the Oakland port seem to be doing good. The only issues they have are with the CARB and the unions.
