It's common sense. Any bridge that is mark 14' or under you need to crawl under the bridge to make sure you'll clear. Never take anyone's word for it because it may have changed since they were there. Who cares if you hold up traffic it's your life on the line here. The first time someone tells you you'll get under with no problem you'll crash into the top and have a many huge problems. The ticket goes to you so you could be liable. I know I sure wouldn't want to pay some RR, state, or whoever money for the rest of my life. It only takes a couple of seconds to know and you'll have peace of mind. That peace of mind is great for your health too.
is there something about low bridges

And be careful getting out of the truck to check also; it wasn't too long ago a trucker was killed when he got out to check the clearance of a bridge, don't remember how it happened though, if he jumped out of the truck to get out or what.
MZdanowicz and BlueSparrow Thank this. -
Combine a sagging overhead, with several layers of new asphalt over the years, those signs may be just a bit off.MZdanowicz Thanks this.

Hey on that note I saw a Pete today with a soft top on the cab. he was pulling a flat bed a very bright met blue with silver pin strips and chrome fenders. had enough metal on the front top of the cab for some aftermarket light horns moved to the bottom of the steps and a curtain style rag top....I tried like heck to get a pic and when my camera finally loaded I turn to get a pic and droped my phone and parts went everwhere but boy what a truck it wasMZdanowicz Thanks this.

25 years ago when I was still running NYC I remember several 12 6 bridges that I regularly ran under... I don't know why they don't show actual height.
MZdanowicz Thanks this. -
thanks big don-after that I fear anything over head for sure even if I have to take another route Mike-Z

As far as I know for here but certainly was the case at home, if its marked 12'6" that's the maximum height allowed under the bridge not the actual height, it'll usually have a couple of inches clearance, however as described before influences like weather conditions or road resurfacing could change that a little and if you hit it and there's still 12'6" clearance you'll be in trouble, so you need to be super careful, hit one of those and you could be looking at a bill for a couple of million

I think too it is marked lower for when they have snow, even though now days it is hard to imagine a foot of snow on a busy road like in NY.
