I'm applying at various local companies, trying to get local or regional work. One company can't seem to answer the question "How much will I make?" The only answer I get is "25% of the load." They get mad when I try to pin down a specific number. So, is that a real answer, or should I move on?
Each ld. might have a different rate on it. So then it's hard to get an exact number. Ask what the avg. ld. pays and take it from there then. Just a thought
Yup 25% is how we pay our flatbedders. It's a pretty common rate. Your not gonna be able to pin down a specific number, you may make $250 one trip and $450 another so an avg is hard to even give an average best thing to do is try and get a number of a driver to ask what a average weekly pay check is or ask that question.
If I were you I'd look at other things besides just pay. I know pay is important but so is safety, how well they keep their trucks up, so on and so on. If you can try to talk with some drivers with the same company. See if they are happy. If you find a couple of drivers with the same complaint I'd start looking closer. See if they have junk or do they really care about you the driver. Get an overall view of whom you're going to spend a lot of time with.
Ask them if you get paid anything for empty or "deadhead" miles. Percentage pay for local driving? Unless its regional [ie 500 mile radius] or oversized/specialized...I dont think thats very common. I would be scared of percentage pay myself...knowing what some of our reload/brokered/backhaul stuff pays I will stick to my cpm pay...but i pull reefers...at least I know what Im getting, and the company takes it up he rear for hauling cheap freight, not me...
