I was a trainer for a large company prior to JB. They are set at 62 as well. The speed thing in my eyes is a coin toss. I can only give you a max amount of miles per day in a governed truck. My speed will be decreased dramatically uphill, as I cannot maintain high rpms needed for uphill torque.
The fuel mileage you mentioned says loads as apparently your friend averaged 3 mpg.
I am neither condoning or bashing governed trucks. Simply stated, you're told upon starting with a company that they are governed. If that's not the route you wish to take, then don't sign on.
I actually only get 2.9 mpgs more than your friend, and I'm governed currently at 70 mph.
I hate the feeling of taking hills in fourth gear at 15 mph though, and I feel that it's a danger to be governed on a 70-80 mph highway.
What's your thoughts?

Think of it this way if he moves to Swift Transport he'll fit right in after driving around a 62 mph on the positive side there saving the environment by using less fuel.

We typically ran "light" loads, up to maybe 50k lbs. total - we never ran anywhere near a full 80k. Of course empty, any of us could run up 9-mile Hill on the west side of Albuquerque, Sedillo Hill on I-40 in Tijeras Canyon, or La Bajada Hill on I-25 south of Santa Fe at 75MPH+ with no issues. With a moderate load, say 30k, we were still able to pull those hills at around 65 - 70MPH.
When we came up the previously mentioned hills and were running empty, we were usually in the hammer lane passing the rest of the trucks with their 4-ways on going exactly as you do... 20 - 25MPH in the right lane. Made passing other trucks on the highway much easier as well. Instead of a 3-mile drag race between a truck set at 62 and one set at 65, we'd just hop over run it up, and get back over, usually within a quarter mile or less.
This was a company with 7 trucks, so not a "mega" by any means so the fuel savings in having a governed truck were basically non-existent. They made more money running the speed limit (or over) and getting more construction / earthmoving equipment on-site and being able to "turn and burn" another one out to another site. When I first started driving, I went with a carrier that was leased onto Swift and those trucks ran 62MPH on cruise and 65MPH on the pedal and it was mind numbing to be cruising down the road at 62 and almost having to ask permission to pass another truck who was also set at 62. With trucks that aren't governed, that's never an issue.
However, we're talking 7 trucks versus 700 (arbitrary number). If you add the money you save in fuel 700 times, and then multiply that by 52 weeks, that can literally add up to hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars, depending on fleet size, over the course of the year. It also keeps your drivers from running afoul of local law enforcement for speeding. -

Pray tell sir, exactly how long is "for awhile"?
BTW, as vehemently as you seem to be defending them, I should point out that you are solidly in the minority. On our site, ONE complaint about a company can often be taken with a grain of salt. JB Hunt however has hundreds to it's dubious credit, certainly not the least of which is this thread from our founder, whose own experience with JB Hunt did not quite go a swimmingly as you're touting yours.

Everyone has a different experience at different times and different locations with every company. I don't doubt there is truth to most peoples claims but there are claims from people who never worked for a company or there friend said or just couldnt hack it or whatever themselves. No company is perfect and some companies improve over time some dont. Every company has rogue employees that destroy its reputation n screw drivers. Some have a really terrible otr division but may have a great dedicated division. There are just so many variables and its hard for me to understand lableing a whole company as evil and horrible when it works great for some n maybe is bad for others. Thats just my point of view on this matter. Theres always someone diving and someone thriving within every company. Everyone can speak there experience n mine is just great. I mean it..its great for me and at my account. Idk about other accounts. I plan on staying as long as i can until i get my own truck and can do my own thing. But if I dont go that route im retiring with jb. Ill be lookin forward to the 1,2and 3 million mile bonuses of 5k 10k and 20k

Are you sure you don't work in the safety department? ???
4 posts ???? I think it's time to get back your desk.dog-c, bigjoel, T_Bone and 1 other person Thank this. -
I've said it before and I'll say it again :
Ever notice how the JB defenders almost always insult people who criticize JB , always criticizing their work ethic, etc. It's like they've got a script.
JB has had a bad reputation since I started trucking in '92...... Why? Because they deserve it. -
