I have. I have always preferred to load coil shotgun. The last time I loaded suicide, that is what I did to secure it.

When I had a Reitenour, or however you spell it, it was a lot easier because there were 2 tracks each side, not just 1 at the rail.

First off there's a big difference between the forces involved in a head on collision and a hard brake situation. Second there is a big difference between securing coils properly and securing them to meet the minimum legal status standards. Legal minimums are wholly inadequate at times.

And i can't see even a coil being secured beyond the standards being kept on the deck if a driver slams on the brakes. Not all those chains are pulling the coil rearward. At most less than half of the aggregate will beholding it back.

If he'd of had a step deck it might have launched the coil over the cab.

I run a connie and ALWAYS load suicide unless customer requirements differ.

I use JHooks and a minimum of six 3/8s chains through the eye and a strap or two over the top.

BUT I also "drive my freight". Meaning I remain aware of just how much weight I have behind me waiting to turn my precious, unique butt into a bloody smear.

Between my securement ans my driving, I've never had a coil move or "telescope".

There's a reason why fulltime steelhaulers are a special breed amongst even the elite flatbedders.

Fortunate to live through that. It's a good lesson when nobody else gets hurt.

How does one "drive my freight" when a car goes left of center and hits you head on?

Or even when traffic slows, you start slowing, and a dozen cars decide they need to be between you and the brake lights ahead....

I wush I'd of saved my drawing of the flatbed with a ramp up front instead of a flimsy headboard.
