That's one of the reasons I quit driving a tow truck.

I used to be a volunteer firefighter until my job took too much time. I was on a couple calls where there was a fatality, in some but not all cases it was quite clear that the accident was caused by repeated bad choices of the victim. It helped that your whole purpose in being there was to help make the best of a bad situation. prob what would have been the worst thing for me would have been if we had not been on top of our game. if there had been more or different options that might have made the difference for the vic that would have really hit me.

You get callous. I don't look at it as a person. I know that sounds cold, but I can't allow myself to think about who they left behind, how young or how old they are. Or wonder how many more lives will be impacted by this collision. I would've gone nuts years ago if I did. I have a job to do, and that job deals with tragedy from time to time. I don't think you ever get used to it or comfortable with it, you just have to do what you have to do.

That is right DB. It is one reason that a lot of workers at the scene use "coroner humor." It isn't that they are uncaring or unfeeling, it is just a way of coping. Folks who have not been exposed to it, probably will not ever be able to understand it. Battlefield veterans understand it even more than those of us who have never been in the military, but have seen more than our share of carnage do.

About a year or so before I got off the job they started with "stress debriefing" after major incidents. Some of us old timers made fun of it. At first. But found out that there is a very good reason for it. I sincerely hope that all of the emergency responders who have started in the last several years, have this available for them.

It should stop a lot of the problems that some of us dinosaurs had and in some cases still have.

nurses use it too-as DB said you have to or you would go nuts. It is part of the job you do. Same as how you can comfort those that need it most and still do the job.

Thank goodness for people like DB and first responsders, EMTs etc

Please everyone stay SAFE out there this Thanksgiving weekend.

DB I have had to use the same with my epilepsy or I would have gone insane. It was either that or end up in the loony bin. For me a Seizure is a Self shaking Milkshake Maker. Or I say I could have a New Career as an Elephant Dildo if I wanted it. Or I am the perfect person to shake up Spray Pint it will be Well mixed evertime. Stuff like that otherwise I would have lost my mind Years ago. I joked the last time at teh ER that they needed to redecorate the place and get a better selection of TV in for people like me.

OK....if he just outright blew the scales, that's one thing and he deserves the ticket. I was under the ###-u-me-ption that he was on a secondary road going around the scales, but I guess he wasn't smart enough to do that.:biggrin_25521:

Speaking as an E.M.T. if we let things get to us we would never be able to do our jobs properly. A Lot of times we have to joke and try to forget about what we just dealt with. UNLESS it involves a child, then it bothers us for quit a while :(

I have been involved in so many calls, that even the child calls have no effect anymore.
