Well I sure can't say that. Yeah, you go ahead and do what you have to do at the time. But then, (for me at least) the sleepless nights follow. And follow. And years later, they are still there occasionally.

There are a few that haunt me. But over time, the effect has diminished.

I don't know if it is just my mental instability, my personality, or just the sheer amount of death and violence that I've seen. But I do know that I have "issues." Actually have spent some time in counselling. Managed to add to the wealth of the psychologist, but as far as I can tell, that is all it did.

When I first got into this, a fire fighter friend was at a fireworks display and got his hand blown off. He came running direct to me. It was an eye opener as to whether I was going to continue in the classes or not.

My instructor met with me and we discussed it in detail. He said you have to distance yourself in order to prevent burnout and other issues.

Initially they all bothered me, but as time went on, I learned I was not capable of saving everyone.

Maybe I am just too callous or wrong.

I don't look at it this way.

Every one has gifts. You have some that I do not have. I have some that you do not have.

Lets face it........... one of the facts of life is that we need folks like yourself to put the rest of us back together when we do stupid stuff or some one else does stupid stuff and we end up being collateral damage.

There were a few too many young collateral damages for me. I didn't realize how hard I had become until I was medically "retired" from it for a few months.

I don't believe you are wrong RM. I know that I developed a lot of callousness for a lot of years. What I DON'T know, is what the hell happened to it. It seems that when I was young, I was not bothered nearly as much as when I got a little older.

Injun, Roadmedic and volvodriver01 Thank this.

I worked Fire / Rescue for many years, served as Fire Chief of our town for nearly a decade.
My problem was I knew nearly everyone we responded to. Teachers, best friends, my mother's Church members, my family. All folks I grew up with. That was hard. To work on an old family friend who was in full arrest,Post Master self in flicted gun-shot, arrive on scene to find my best friends young son under a tractor, you know the calls. It just bothered me it was almost always someone I saw on a regular basis.
But someone had to do it. And they trusted us to do our job.

When I was on the FD we got paged on a call "man down, construction accident, collapse".
I knew the address, it was close to my house and I knew the guys that were working there.

I JUST KNEW I was going to pull a friend's body out from under collapsed dirt. It was weighing
very heavily as I made my way to the scene. Much slower than I was want to travel to other scenes.
When we got there his upper body was uncovered thanks to his work partner's quick action.
We sent him to the hospital to get check out, he came home a few hrs later.
Talk about an extremely lucky man along with his family. This was thanksgiving week no less back in 02.

That call even tho it ended very well has always stayed with me.
